e-bay gets worse
looking on e-bay for a mate, as he's after a set of forged sti pistons.
& i came across these:
SUBARU IMPREZA TYRE RA FORGED PISTONS & STEEL CON RODS on eBay, Subaru, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (item 220143935085 end time 02-Sep-07 16:01:00 BST)
know taking a good couple of engines apart, you just know what your looking for. but you get people selling things that just are not what they say they are.
i just can not stand people getting ripped off

Hi Guys, Thank you for pointing out the pistons to me.
I had these pistons checked by a professional engine builder and was told they were forged pistons, I was only advertising what I was told they were.
I have since taken your advice and have cancelled all bids on the auction and relisted them as subaru pistons from a type ra which they are.
I have been a part of the Ebay family for some years, as I have on Scoobynet and as you can see from my feedback it is 100%, that is how I would like to keep it.
Simon69, Yes it was a genuine error.
Shaggy1973, my username suggest it all, I am sorry I do not understand, because I have a username of Rallyingarron does not mean I am a qualified engine builder, I wish I was!
Dabow, They did come from a WRX type RA 1993 car, my car.
Again, this was a genuine error and I thank you all for pointing this out to me.
Arron.

Luminous, I must admit I too cannot see the differences in the pictures, I have been told the pistons I had listed were forged, I have also been advised they are not, I don't want to start a debate or a problem on ebay or even here on SN so in the best interests of everbody I changed the auction, I will check into it tomorrow and hope I can get to the bottom of it.
Whether they are forged Pistons or normal pistons they are in excelent condition. LOL's.

The link in the first post are basic old fashioned pistons...large and deep skirt at the base (i.e side of the piston) and there is a skirt around the base of the wrist pin (gudgeon pin) side of the piston. Also the skirts have no anti-friction coating, so must be from an early engine.
Later (happy slappy*) pistons as shown in the above pic have much shollower/ shorter skirts, with no skirt on the gudeon pin side of the piston, the overall height of the piston is shorter (stroke is unaffected). When looking at the piston from the bottom, the area below the crown (skirt area) is more or less a rectangle with rounded edges (due to the lack of skirt on the gudgeon pin sides). Also you will find anti wear/ anti friction coatings on the skirt which usually are black.
This picture in dabow's post when compared to teh ebay link clearly shows the difference between the older style and newer style pistons. Be it cast or forged.
The visual differences between forged and cast is harder to describe, but mainly you can tell by the underside of the piston, usually with a cast piston you will see rougher edges and seam lines. While the underside of a forged piston wiill be smoother and more rounded -especially around the gudgeon pin area.
This is a fairly good link at telling the difference between forged and cast on later 2.5 STi piston designs: Subaru STI Performance
*just incase anyone pipes up - they only slap more due to the much shorter skirt - these pistons are still far superior to the older non-slapping variety, even if they do slap a bit when cold.

aboth has a lot more details.
but ye, there very different. i know the newage has cast pistons that look the same. but they have no sheen to them at all
the pick is of sti v4 piston i have in my uk 95, my mate is/was after a set
just think of it in this way, who ever won them pistons mistake or not. & took there engine to bits, just to find they had the very same pistons in there. i sold mine on e-bay the same cast type. but only got a £10er for them
still, no harm done.
