ok, im kinda baffled, i want to buy a blue or white subaru but there a lot of different verions like wrx,sti, p1 ect. Im not sure what im buying.

what would be ideal as a 1st scoob, spending £4k.??

4k is gonna get you a classic WRX I would think.

Have a look on Parker's or something to see some model info.
