Trackers is it worth it?
Hi all,
Just wondering do many of you guys have trackers fitted?
Ive just bought a car with one fitted, insurance company told me it wouldnt affect the premium as the car isnt worth over 15K!!
Is it worth me setting mine up?
£130 a year and £35 registration fee?
Cheers

I've recovered 4 cars in the past three weeks directly as a result of a tracker having been fitted to the cars. 2 of the cars were actually Scoobies, and ther owners were well happy.
One of the Scoobies was stopped with the theives still in it 1 mile from the location where it was stolen, just 20mins after it was stolen.
In all cases, suspects were arrested and nearly all of them have been charged.
So from a police point of view, Trackers are a great help.
From a personal point of view, I've got one on mine.

I had one fitted to both Scoobs and, both Evos. Insurance was indifferent to them, some said "you can't have a discount for both a tracker and a cat 1 alarm" where as others required one prior to granting a policy. If you value your motor get one. Some people say that "they wouldn't want it back" after it had been stolen, but as they are usually recovered quickly when fitted with a tracker I don't think that remark holds water. Still, you must make up your own mind.

Trackers in terms of performance are hit and miss.
If the car doesn't get found within 24 hours of the tracker being activated, assume the unit has been found and disabled (quite easy to do - they maybe hidden, but not as well as one would like).
I have had them previously, and have one on one of my current cars (insurer's request). The first car was for lifetime ownership of the car - so paid for itself after 3 years. the other car is annual.
Given the option, if you intend to keep the car; go lifetime. But only consider it if you really value the car so much or the insurance demand that you have one.
I personally would put BOTH a CAT3 disclock AND a well installed non-factory CAT1 alarm used together in priority to having tracker.

I decided not to renew my Tracker Monitor last time around.
It made no difference to insurance because they had gone off the clifford alarm for the premium. Tracker have no way of proving to you that the thing actually works and if the car gets stolen and it doesn't work what was the point paying for it all those years.
In some cases, yes, if caught early I'd want the car back. However, a heck of a lot of damage can be done to a cars engine/transmission in a short space of time. I wouldn't want my car back only to find something fails internally as a result of the theft.
Also depends on value of the car. If my classic got pinched, I'd probably get more on a claim anyway. When I finally buy a replacement (probably another Impreza) its going to be worth £10K+. If it has a tracker, this time I want one that can be shown as tested working and one that can have a lifetime one off payment.

My STI is fitted with tracker but they wanted £130 to renewal and my insurance wouldn't give me a discount so it sits unmonitored, bar the Cat 1 alarm.
I'll just buy another if it gets nicked

Alternative is a SMS paging device, Pages when alarm goes off or detect vehicle movement.
Seeing it uses GSM technology, one can also subscribe to a on-line tracking service so you can track it yourself - just add mates and baseball bats
The advantage of this unit is taht it can be installed in a much more stealthy location and just require a few quid pay as you go top up every 12months to keep it working. TRacking subscription can be started when you actually need to find the car.
The disadvantage is zero insurance discount, and no police support.

Back then though, I saved £300 on my first years insurance, with tracker fitted. These cars were quite rare and were just earning their reputation. Touch wood, Ive not needed to use it, but occassionally I move the unit and then receive a call from tracker, so its still working fine.

Mine came with Tracker fitted.
TBH if my car was stolen, then I think I wouldn't want it back anyway. Better to have it smashed up with the thieving scum crushed to death inside, than get back a car that's been thrashed and probably damaged.
I only renew my Tracker subscription for insurance purposes.

I had a tracker fitted when i bought the car but like many others i didnt renew this year. There were a few reasons for this. One was that the insurance company didnt offer a discount for it, i live near the Breacon Mountains (joy riders paradise) and they block most tracker signals and when i last drove to France i didnt even get a call to ask if i was in it at any point while away or when i returned, so i havnt got much trust in them.
Im with Shark Man with the disc lock and quality alarm/imobiliser system, keycode start is the way to go!!!
