Default Buying a Impreza Turbo

Newbie here with my first post!

I am looking to get my first Impreza Turbo in the next few months and just wanted a few opinions on my potential purchase.

I would be looking at the classic shape Impreza possibly a 2000 model or slightly earlier. From looking around it seems I can get a decent UK model with average miles for about £6k. Does this seem about right?

With me purchasing a car which will probably have about 70k-80k miles are there many parts that will need replacing/upgrading around that time. Would the car be on its original suspension still at that age and is the engine likely to need any work on it?

I quite like the look of the Catalunya model but I guess these are quite rare. There is one on Ebay/Auto Trader at the moment that says it is original however the Auto Trader ad says it has a dump valve. I did not think they came with this as standard but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I will be looking to definetely get a UK model which is original and unmodified. Any pointers I should look for when viewing cars etc.

Sorry for the long rant!

Thanks in advance.
Tim

Thanks for the offer mate but I will not be in a position to buy for a month or two and I would want one with a lower mileage. Although it isn't a major problem for me I could see it being a potential hassle to sell on in the future to someone else.

i picked my current classic up for £3900 back in dec 06.

uk turbo, pretty standard apart from (then) sti backbox and p1 alloy wheels.
120k on the clock, but new engine at 70k. now has circa 130k on the cloak, but i have bought mods for it, and replaced parts i wasnt happy with, ie tyres and suspension.

if you get a higher mileage car, haggle the price down a bit, as generally wear and tear items will need to be budgeted for.

£6k will easily get you a late MY00 Classic with 50-60k Miles.
Some are going for cheaper but if I sold mine (44k) I'd want £6k for it.

Cars don't come with Atmos dump valve's as standard - They can harm the engine - Do a search on here.

A car may look original and unmodified but a lot of sellers take mods off when selling as buyers tend to want unmolested cars - Ask them.

Check tyres and ask when the last cambelt change was done and if the clutch has been replaced - All very costly.

Take someone with you who knows about cars and try not to let your heart rule your head because as soon as you put your foot down you will want one

not necessarily. some people think they do some dont, but from what ive read on here and been told by specialist, they do neither harm or good to the engine. all down to personal choice...

i did this after buying my scoob last december. had the cambelt service done as piece of mind... clutches arent that costly compared to other things scoob related. many places can supply and fit a clutch for around £400.

defo agree on this. especially if you wanted an import (although you seem to steer towards uk cars ) always helps to have a neutral opinion, so you buy with your head and not your heart.

good luck anyways fella. if you see any examples on tinterweb, post piccies of the adverts on here, cant help to get others opinions, and you could save yourself the chance of being lumped with a dog/thrashed example.

as the dude above says, 6k should get you an excellent clean example (low miles too) from around the my00 range. if its been modded, ask lots of questions regards this, ie...

why?? (track use or just extra power etc)
paperwork/reciepts
history
any substancial work like rebuilds or new components bla bla.

Think I would prefer a silver one to be honest. There doesn't appear to be many unmodified examples about. I assume that is because the owners don't want to sell!

Depends what the mods are really if they've done the exhaust, maybe the suspension then i don't think that would be a problem.
It's when you get to them messing about with the engine (changing/remapping the ecu, boost controllers etc) then I would avoid it.

Just bought a mint 99 classic, full subaru history, every receipt from new loads of new parts fitted, new clutch and had the 60k service, 61k miles £6495, worth every penny, no problems with it whatsoever.

I've had a UK Classic Turbo 2000 MY00 for the last 2 years now. Apart from servicing this is whats it's needed during the 20K miles I've put on it to take it up to 75K.

8 tyres (Toyo Proxies T1R's) £600
MAF sensor £90
Front pads (2 sets) £160
Front disc's £170
Clutch £350

Also need to change rear discs and pads soon too.

Hope this is helpfull for you.
