Was most pissed off when I rang Parcelforce and told I would have to pay £22.45 (£8.95 VAT, £13.50 Parcelforce clearance fee) for them to release the parcel.
Are all parcels from abroad opened & charged in this way by UK Customs or have I just been unlucky?
Pretty annoyed having to pay Parcelfarce £13.50 for fcuck all too.

Some get stopped, some don't. It's only for countries outside the EU.
But with the exchange rate, it is still working out cheaper getting stuff from USA with international shipping & customs.

a lot of the charges are actually worked out before customs even see the package. Everything shipped has to have a customs declaration with it and when its sent by a company and you've paid a fixed amount for it usually they have to put this on the document. This all gets entered when the parcel is shipped onto a central computer system that customs use to work out the charges. Gift etc can work it all depends if the seller will write it on as in many cases its an offence and they also can work on it not being a gift if its shipped to your credit card billing address. As for the parcel farce charge there is a lot of admin behind it so I can see why they charge
