I ask because I recently thought about changing my 53 Civic Type R for a Impreza. Went to look at some today and saw a 98 STi V4 Wagon. I was looking for classic salons to be honest but all the ones I had seen on the net had been modded to varying degree's which I wasn't to keen on.
However the wagon is all but standard and a very good example, been looked after with loads of paper work etc and I am very close to going for it. Passenger'ed in it and it's defiantly a step up from my Civic performance wise and is that little bit different to boot. If I was the impulsive type I think I'd have done the deal there and then but it's my nature to mull things over a bit before committing to owt.

Anyway got me wondering how many of you had gone for the first example you looked at?

Bought the second. Only reason i didn't get the first is because they were haggling on bits like tyres but not price. Went away and got a newer wagon at a grand less with the same miles on. Worth having a think about things i reckon.

I did! went and test drove it then bought it, didn't have much choice as it was the last classic left for sale before the long wait for the bugeye abomination to rear its ugly head

Not me. First I test drove a MY97 saloon (bit laggy, not too keen on the interior), then a MY99 wagon (much better in both respects), and ended up ordering a new MY00.

Then when the time came to change, I tried a MY04 STI which was brilliant, then a MY04 JDM STI which was just as good and had more toys, and ordered a MY05 JDM STI. With hindsight, I didn't actually enjoy driving the MY05 half as much as I expected, and I wished I'd bought the MY04 UK car after all. You live and learn, I guess. I ended up selling it and buying a BMW.

I did - not usually one to buy the first thing I see, but this was in mega nic with FSSH and one owner! I knew it would be a while before I found another one like this, and I am still well happy with it! (unlike the Renault 5 gt turbo I bought many years ago!!! - still sends shivers down my spine the amount of cash I threw at that bastid 10 years on!!!)

Third one for me - I drove a round trip of 200 miles to find the right one. Completely unmodded, FSH etc etc.

I did too. Test drove it and the mad little blighter tried to shred it's tyres every time I applied pressure to the loud pedal. "Hmmmm" I thought, "I quite like this!!". 2 years down the line, and I still love it like a fat kid loves cake.

I bought 2 Subarus without even driving them or even one like it

My first new car was a MY02 STi and ordered it without trying one ( There was no demonstrators available

I went to Litchfields and road tested a MY03 Spec C I only sat in a near new 06 JDM STi in the showroom and ended up buying it First time I drove it was after it was converted to a Type 20

Yet my advice is always buy with yor Brains and not your *****, perhaps I ought to listen to my own advice

well the first scooby i owned was by chance, i went to the showroom to test drive escort cossie, i was about ready to part cash when the salesman said that he also had a 6 month old Subaru, took it home that same day !!!
my current car had fssh, only 63,000 on a my99 and one veterinarian from new!!: i love the classic shape.

I did my uk classic MY00.Had her for 4 years and had no problems at all
And then i did the same with the one i have now,although this has cost me a small fortune but this is all my own doing as my modding has gone into overdrive

I sold my 03 Civic Type R on Pistonheads then went looking seriously for an Impreza, bought the 3rd one I saw/testdrove, Mrs had to trust me as she had seen/driven the other 2 but couldnt get the time off work to make the 100 mile trip to see the one we now own ( 2005 Sti PPP'd)

exactgly the same as me, went to see a mitsi gto, looked a bit rough round the edges, and saw the sti wagon lurking in the corner, spotless and 85 out of 200 built, so thought sod it i'll take a gamble, and so far, touch wood, it's never let me down in nearly 3 years of ownership, and it's an old one, 94 version 1 sti wagon.

best car ive ever had and love it that much i had the chassis number tattooed on my wrist!!!!!

First Impreza was bought at a first viewing, main stealer car.
Second was bought from a stealer without even seeing it. Couldn't resist as it was an MY03 STI bought in 2006 with only 9k on it.

lol, glad i'm not the only impulsive buyer done it 3 times now!

bought a series mcrae as i just HAD to own a scooby (bought it when there used to be a 6 month+ waiting list and it was all they had and 3k over budget ) foolishly sold that for a MY99 as i just HAD to have that (again still a waiting list) loved that for 4 odd years then bought my current one.

had to do a near on 600 mile round trip for this puppy, but then again there's not too many of them around so it had to be done oh, and yes money was exchanged within about an hour

I would say definitely drive it before you buy. Cars always feel faster when you're not driving IMHO.

Bought the first one a test drove. 04wrx. Got it from a dealer and it was still priced £1500 under the list price according to parkers and glasses. One previous owner and only 16300 miles on it. Got 4 new break pads and two new tyres and a years warranty.

I bought mine without ever having been in a subaru. No test drive, just a couple of photos and a description - even got it delivered.

Bought it over the net from a very trustworthy chap. Not the normal way I do business.

It has never let me down and was an absolute bargain. far faster than my evo.

My current car was bought after a few hours test drive.Was a demo with 100 miles on the clock.

Went along on the saturday,told by the salesman that 'i'm on my own today so you'll have to take it out yourself' WOOHOO !!!!

Even let me take it home (30 mins away) and made sure it fit okay in my garage !!

Bartered over a few bits and left saying i'd think about it.Emailed him the next day and asked for a couple more bits and he agreed.Called him the following day with a deposit.

Not regretted it for a moment.

Bought mine on a "Buy it now" on ebay, so hadn't even viewed it, car only had 19k on the clock and still had 5 months Subaru proven warranty remaining. Was too big a bargain at £9k (10 months ago) to let go.

Was a 160 mile round trip (Carlisle) so I was pleased that the car was immaculate when I did go to buy it

Oh, and it was the first Scoob I'd ever driven as well

Drove past the Scooby garage in Durham one day (in my early mid life crisis hairdressers Z3) and thought "I wouldnt be seen dead in one of those". Went off and test drove a bunch of other disappointing luxury rep mobiles(I was uneducated back then), before giving my head a ferkin good shake and booked a test drive.

Two days later, after the sales guy scared the sh*t out of me in the demonstrator, I bought a 9 month old 2004 WRX with 6k on the clock and have never looked back.

I'm not quite as hard core as WRXSTI280 - "chassis number tattooed on wrist !!!!!!!!!!!!!" - I take my hat off to you mate, but I cant see myself driving anything else right now, and Ive driven some very nice cars.

I think they definitely win on the value for money scale (mine was £13k I think) and mine has never missed a beat. It went through its MOT yesterday only needing a number plate light bulb - I think it was £3

After driving mine, two other people Ive known have gone out and bought theirs and they are more than happy.

Now its out of warranty, its time to start saving cash for the mods

Nearly bought the first one we test drove, till the engine warning light came on. Kinda put me off. Plus the dealer was abit of an ****. He had the car advertised at one price then when we were seriously interested he had added side skirts and sprayed them white to match the rest of the car and wanted us to pay for this as an extra!! We hadnt asked for him to fit them and were abit shocked he has added this extra work onto the price!!

Walked away in the end, just had a bad feeling about the car.

Bought the 3rd one we looked at which ironically was local after driving miles to look at the other 2.

Took me about five months to find one like my MY00 PPP. Was totally spotless in every way, owned it 2 1/2 years and sold it last October .

I asked a little more than the going rate for classics similar at the time and a few people made offers below without viewing but I knew it was immaculate and just held out for someone to view it. Naturally, the first two people that saw it both wanted it but one had to sell their car first so the other got there first and I got my asking price without any haggling. Haven't seen the guy on here though which is a little disappointing as would like to know how it is getting on.

Now i'm looking to get another classic Scooby and have my eye on a couple of special ones .
