Default annoying - expensive? - problem

Guys,

I've got a 95 WRX auto wagon with vibrations that I can't seem to cure...

Had it a few months now and there's always been vibration on braking through the pedal. And through the whole car at high speeds (checked off road), at around 90-110mph.

Braking got worse so asked my local garage (Subaru owner) to check out the brakes. Took 'em apart and refitted; all seemed OK, plenty of wear left, etc.

Made no difference.

Fitted a couple of new tyres, had them all balanced (while I watched - spon on) and 4 wheel alignment checked (it was out, but corrected).

Still no difference. If anything, seems a bit worse (but that might be my imagination...).

Where do I go from here? Discs/pads seem OK but may be warped. But would that also account for the high speed vibration? Don't want to spend on this, that and t'other in a quest for a solution - not only could that be expensive, but it may be pointless if the combined wisdom of Scoobynet knows what the problem is from this description.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Dave

have you had all 4 wheels balanced? front you feel through the steering, rears through the car.

it's either the wheels or the brakes.

If the vibration is only felt though the brake padel under braking, Its warpped discs for sure.

And strangely enough..... https://www.scoobynet.com/private-sa...iscs-pads.html

Yes, all four wheels balanced, new ones on the front. All very frustrating - the brakes, wheels, balance, alignment, suspension etc (checked during service) all appear spot on.

The suspicion is it's the brakes. Think I'll have to change the discs/pads and see if that also cures the high speed vibration. If not....

Have you checked for play in the suspension components? worn rubber bushes may be at fault and need to ruled out before replacing brakes.
Simple jack the car up can do one wheel at a time, grab the road wheel and try to move side to side and in and out this will check for play in wheel bearings as well. If you can borrow a set of wheels from a mate that can also rule out tyre and wheel and if you fit your wheels to you mates car and he suddenly gets the vibration then drive off quick with his wheels and never go back
Good luck matey.

Brake discs can be checked with a DTI to see if they are warped.

Probably brakes. Ask yourself if you have driven the car hard recently. If you have, its most probably the discs that have warped a little.

It's almost certainly warped discs if it only vibrates when braking, this would also tie in with the fact that it's worse the higher speed your speed is! Had this problem many times before,

Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated. My service guy and the tyre place checked for play in the suspension etc; all's fine. I agree it does seem to point to the brakes - but that only left me confused about the high speed vibration (not under braking). Are the problems related? If not, what causes the high speed vibration? Seems that I first need to check the discs for warping and replace.

Watch this space...!

thanks

Yeah, thanks Dan - spotted that thread. Worrying. I'm trying some new discs/pads courtesy of Harvey first. Will keep an eye on your thread and report findings.

God knows. Must have been like it when I bought the car. I only started to notice the vibration when I fitted larger brakes.

Well, new discs and pads fitted; not right time for a full work out, but vibration under normal braking has gone. However, the high speed vibration is still there, though it doesn't 'seem' as bad. Early days. Will report back when bedded in and given it a proper workout.

Default hmmm

Nice try Dan.........

Something tells me the saga will run and run. It still doesn't feel quite right (although for now it's certainly bettter).

Give it 1,500 miles and I bet it starts again....
