Can I drive without a bumper?
I am getting my bumper re-sprayed soon as I had an accident with a high kerb.
Anyway, I still need the use of a car, so my question... Is it illegal to drive without a bumper

Morning,
It is legal as long as the officer that may stop you decides that it is not in a "Dangerous condition" i.e any sharp prongs sharp brackets or similar items which may cause unecessary injury to someone. If it is the front bumper this includes any automatic radiator fans which one in a million chance of you stopping at traffic lights the fan coming on and little johnny sticks hits fingers in and turns them into chips

The worst that could happen is you are stopped and the car is prohibited on a road that you can not safely park up the car (while you get a bumper) and it will therfore be towed away and impounded at your cost.. and I tell you now the police impound service are a) not gentle with the cars and b) not cheap!

Do not drive without a front bumper as you can get done and if you knock down a pedestrian they'll go under the car rather than over. This is not the usual assumption bollox....i've been there!!

God Damit! I'm the resident pig round here!!
As long as it is not considered to be in a "Dangerous Condition" you can drive it. There are some Dickweed cops out there mind
If you own an old nail with a bent rusty wing which is sharp and sticking out that could be deemed in a "Dangerous Condition" to.

Thanks guys. Not sure I'll chance it after the comment by 'esp ltd'. And like our resident copper says, 'there are some dickweed cops' that may cause me problems. I had a chat with the sprayer today and he is confident that it will only take one weekend.
Good info guys.

You cant just pluck old cars out of the as a reference, these vehicles were not required to have a bumper and dont tend to have sharp brackets and other dangerous components floating around under neath a neat plastic bumper..
Its like saying, well a mini clubman didnt have a catalytic converter so why should my car??
Different padestrian saftey regulations apply to different models/years so the simple answer is YES you will get prohibited if a traffic officer can be arsed to do so.. and YES your insurance will be invalid if your insurance company want to push the point.
