Default What Oil

What oil would you say is better out of Silkolene Ro Race 10/50 and Millers CFS 10/60?

I run a 330bhp Impreza WRX Newage 2003.

Cheers

My 03 WRX is circa 330 bhp, RCMS fill it with Silkolene Pro R.
And the oil i had before was the same rating, so there must be something in it! lol.

The simple anwser to this question is that there is nobody on SN who is capeable of making the choice for the thread starter, as there is nobody here with enough knowledge or experience to dicate which oil is better for an individual's application, that is if either oil mentioned is suitable at all.

What happened to giving a little more thought in your posts after your own personal thread in Scoobynet Policy?

OK, so "what oil" is a recurring question, but at least the poster has narrowed it down to a selection of 2 so has obviously done a little background research, and is asking people's opinions of them. The only thing he's possibly done wrong is post it in the wrong section...

I was told in a garage the other day that it was ok to put magnatec oil in as a top up is this right? i know nothing about oil ,but is this stuff semi symthetic or what? i dont understand this oil thing ,numbers and all that, i have asked the same question b4 on here about topping up, and most people say make sure u get the oil that has been put in at the service but i was desperate 4 oil and was told this would b ok as long as its the same grade, can some one tell me what this magnatec is cheers.

Castrol Magnatec is a semi-synthetic oil and is fine for your topping-up. All modern semi and full synthetic will mix with no bad effects. Obviously to get full benefit from the oil, top-up with the same stuff whenever possible. Any decent garage will give you a litre of the oil they use at service, for topping-up, if you ask them.

My Comment still holds water ..... there will be a 50% split and the poster will have not moved one inch forward.

Therefore, to save wasting time, my advice is, was and will always be - make your own mind up and drive!!

Both of those oils sound a little thick for a newage engine.

Either one will be fine, though personally id go for Motul either the 5w40 or the 15w50, choice of STi for their cars (and WRC team)

That's a BIG difference in viscosity.
The latest engines were designed to use lower viscosity oils so, a 5/40 is perfectly fine for all seasons.
The poster spoke of Silkolene and Millers - both very good oils, so:-
Silkolene - Pro S 5w/40 - all year round, or if it makes you feel better, 5/40 in the winter months and Pro S 10/50 in the summer (what summer!)
Millers - CFS 5/40 or 10/40 - all year round or 10/40 in the summer.

JohnD

PS PSL is right - the poster is, by now, totally confused!

what does the "w" denote in 5w40 as opposed to 5/40 for example?

Viscosity rating when cold.

The first number in any multigrade oil rating is always the cold temperature rating, doesn't matter if its divided by a "/" or a "W" its the same.

The latter numbers is viscosity rating when hot.

So:

5w40 is the same as 5/40 or 5-40 etc.

Also:

5w40 is the same as 10w40 when hot, but the 10w40 is thicker when cold
5w30 is the same as 5w40 when cold, but 4w40 is thicker when hot

Hope that helps

This will probably fly over your head, but thse are the actual limits for each cold rating:

The first set of number(s) in each line being the cold viscosity rating.
The second set of numbers in each line is the maximum dynamic/absolute vicosity limit, measured in CentiPose (cP)
The third set is each line is the minimum temperature limit for each viscosity rating measure in degrees Celsius (C)

0W 6200 @ -35°C
5W 6600 @ -30°C
10W 7000 @ -25°C
15W 7000 @ -20°C
20W 9500 @ -15°C
25W 13000 @ -10°C

Back to the OP, the engine was designed fo Xw40, going to Xw50 would be within tolerance, but Xw60 MAY give oil flow problems hot (it probably won't but as no-one on here will have done anything like even 10% of the testing Subaru has done.....), so whatever oil you go for, I would recommend sticking to Xw40 or Xw50, so of your choices, the Silkolene.
