Help with a knocklink anyone???
Hi guys,
I 've just had my engine rebuilt due to a piston melting which was caused by detonation I think (very expensive )
I'm looking for a decent knocklink/det alarm etc. Can anyone recommend a place where I can pick one up and would it need fitting by a pro?
Thanks
Ian

Read it ................................
A CockLink won't prevent a holed piston .............................
End of ......
the setting up procedure includes de-sensitising until no red lights show - thats useful then

I have no explaining to do ..... I think it's useless ......
YOU tell me how it WILL prevent a holed piston .........
Remember, the CockLink only tells you whats happened AFTER the event!!
My ears tell me if I am pinking - the driveability of the car tells me if my piston is holed - I don't need no Random Light Generator to tell me anything whatsoever!!
OK, OK, OK, it impresses the 14 year olds at MacDonalds - maybe it's worth the money just for that?
But it gets you MINUS points from those who know .............

you realy arn't too bright are you pete?
if you can't even understand the concept, then theres no real point in trying to explain it to you.
perhaps should add an infraction to you for your comments like this?

Maybe you could honour us by telling everyone how a passive device actually prevents a holed piston? That was the question I think?
If the CockLink actually intervenes and retards the ignition further than the ECU on the car can, then I will have to re-examine my opinions as it could then be useful. Maybe it squirts some high octane fuel into the intake? Please enlighten us .........
Or maybe it just illuminates some coloured LED if there is a bit of clattering going on in the engine bay? ................... in which case, you know the rest.

My understanding was that, if callibrated correctly, it would show you of potential problems. I'm not sure how much detonation you would require to cause piston failure, but I can't imagine that it is instantaneous.
An EGT sensor (with an alarm - ooo we could have 5 LEDS ) would also give an indication of incorrect combustion as the leaner the mixture the hotter the burn will be. Ideally you'd want an EGT in the combustion chamber itself - maybe I'll invent an temperature sensing spark plug and go on dragons den
