Noisy brake pads!
After driving at high speed on the motorway for a length of time when i slow down and start driving under around 40mph my brake pads squeel very loud. If i stop for 10 mins and drive off they stop making this noise??
Any ideas what this is?
Im thinking of replacing the brake pads as they are budget ones but do have plenty of wear left

if they are cheap pads, just throw them out.
I had a set on my car (garage fitted them by accident). total waste of space, nearly binned the car when i went out for a little fun, and I do mean a little. Never use cheap pads unless you are a Grandpa. All imo of course.

I run Mintex 1144, they are good. There are 3 grades 1144, 1155, 1166, the higher the number the more temperature they can take before they fade. However, the 55 and 66 don't work well from cold. 1166 are an absolute no for a road car. 1155 may be the ones you want if you really hammer your car, including track days. 1155 will not work so well from cold, so you will have to be careful.
1144 are fine from cold and work well. Not had any issues with mine at all, but I don't race my car or take it to track days.

Nearly all pads have the cut down the middle, even the cheap **** I took off mine had that.
I only put 1144s on the fronts as the rears have not needed to be changed yet. I paid £60 for the fronts (ex fitting).

Check that the wear indicators aren't distorted
Mine was doing the same until I found out that the wear indicators make an audible (squeaking) sound when the pad is low
Just a thought!!!!!!!!

Will check the wear indicators.
The noise is a kind of metallic scraping noise that goes if you put your foot on the brake and comes back when you take your foot off the brake

thats what mine did - I only found out about two weeks ago what it meant and the day after I found out my rear pad flew out when I braked!!!!!!!!
I think it was due for replacement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All changed and now no squeaks.
I thought my brakes were good before this happened but they are just evil now.

My classic made a similar squealing noise and I realised rear pads needed replaced. But even with the replacement pads on, it still sequeals when you brake. There's definately nothing wrong with the disc or anything else so I just think it can sometimes happen in classics. My friend has the same car and his squeals occasionally as well.

i have a similar thing on my classic. had the discs and pads changed on the front first, then the rears soon after.
if im on a motorway, and then slow down to normal speed limit, braking becomes slightly squeeky on the front and on the back. but if i reverse, jesus christ, its like a virgin and a baseball bat met each other. really loud, and all i have is standard discs pads on the rear. uprated pads standard discs on the front.

As above, irregular wear across the brake pad does cause this to happen. Possibly cause by a slightly sticky caliper piston.
Sanding the pads flat again and chamfering the edges can help, as will giving the pistons a good exercise.
However if a piston is slightly sticky and the pad is half worn, its likely to happen again if the same pad is reused. Replacing the pads with new ones will push the piston back in to a point where they may not stick. However the problem may return when the pads wear down again. Which the only full cure is a caliper rebuild/replacement.
Obviously not to forget fresh copper-eaze on the back plate and sliders. Replacement anti-squeels shim may also be needed.
Final point to note...if the squeel is continuous or worse when taking bends without braking, and the noise stops when braking. Its worth checking the wheel bearings for play, as that also causes the pads to be positioned at a slight angle in relation to the disk and thus squeel.
