First Spin in a Spec C ... Thoughts

First Spin in a Spec C ... Thoughts
I got my first drive in a MY05 Spec C today.
I have to say I was disappointed . 2-4k rpm I was thinking wow - this is impressive. After that, the boost seemed to continue at exactly the same rate, all the way to 7-8k rpm. I was waiting for the shove back in the seat, but it never came.
I am comparing this to my old Type R which I believe was approx 300BHP. OK, there was more lag in the Type R, but it definitely felt like once it hit 4-5k rpm, it really flew.
The owner said this was due to the VVTi system and that the power delivery was very linear. He also said it is very deceiving. The car is totally standard and was perhaps running a low grade fuel.
So can anyone with a similar Spec C comment on this? Do you feel there may have been something a miss with this car? Does you the "shove" factor increase in your Spec C as you climb the revs or not?
I am not trying to create a "my car is better than yours" thread, I am genuinely interested in buying a Spec C but was left feeling a little sad after my first spin.
I look forward to the replies!
Wes.

I dont find the "shove" in the back that hard in my spec c either, i think its down to the twin scroll turbo, but the power band is quite good from 3k to around 7k

Peak torque in any particular gear, is your max acceleration in that gear. For turbo cars that is generally less than 4k rpm. For NA cars its closer to 5k, and for Honda V-Tec its over 5k.
When you are used to waiting for your acceleration fix, it can be disappointing to find that one is not delivered high up the rev band. I don't have a Spec C, but I guess drivers are going to tell you that what you felt is reasonably normal. You don't get a sudden rush of power at the top end.

At higher speeds (e.g. 60mph), there definitely felt like there was power there, even in a high gear. It was just when say from a rolling start in first, and you plant it, it didnt seem too exciting.
Maybe this has a lot to do with two years in a "No power ... then BANG" Type R.

I dont know much about the spec C, but presume it has at least one cat which might be strangling the car somewhat.

Twin scroll delivers a more linear power curve. not like the old turbo'd days of *lag*....*lag*...*lag*.....*big exponential explosion of power*. That's what makes a lot of the old turbo'd motors feel deceiving due to the massive kick in the back from the turbo coming strong. With the twin scroll you get boost much earlier and in a more linear fashion, so you don't get huge torque kick, just more usable power, earlier and for longer.

May be useful to read the article on the Scoobynet Subaru, they had similar feeling after a re map the acceleration is more progressive and not a shove in the back as before, inspite of extra bhp.
I had similar feeling when going from a 208bhp early Impreza (took of at 4500rpm) to a later 215 bhp vesrsion with more torque (started pulling from 3500 rpm).
But felt slower, all data showed it was faster.

Thanks for the comments all,
I am 99% that I will buy it! Why bother posting, you might say? I guess I was trying to ascertain was this normal for a Spec C/Twin Scroll Subaru.
Aside from my subjective performance evaluation, I fell in love with the car. I know people say the Spec is raw, well compared to the Type R it is quite refined, but in a good way. More grown up, like me I suppose
Handling was amazing too. Body roll was minimal, brakes would put you through the windscreen if you werent belted up.

I can't possibly let a Spec C thread go without a post from myself! I also have a MY05 Spec C. It was 294bhp on the rolling road near me as standard, before mods. Probably why you didn't notice too much difference vs your 300bhp "old school" Scoob. After a few simple mods it's now running much higher bhp & makes me from ear to ear every day!!
TX.
PS
Even in standard guise it was/is a fast car. I was well impressed from the word go. Mind you I did have a 330d sport before the Spec C

I felt the same when I test drove my MY05 STI PPP. I had a EVO VI TME which gave an explosive shove in the back when accelerating. When I drove the STI the power deliverey was much more linear as it had PPP fitted. The actual stats showed that the PPP in gear times were quicker than the TME.

I must say I'd much rather have gradual feed in of power from well below 4k than lag till 4k then a big punch, far more manageable drive IMO - Especially when exiting roundabouts !!

Like TX says get it bought you will never look back the only problem is once your used to its power and handling traits you will want more and the modding bug will begin

Get a Miltek and a remap = 350bhp. Still no big wallop but you feel a great surge all the way from 2000-8000 revs. And the roar of the exhaust makes a difference too ... my C was way too quiet when it was standard despite the lack of sound deadening.

Cheers Guys,
Have spoken to Iain a few times now on the phone, excellent service so far, that is the main reason i have bought from him, i trust his opinions and judgement on a car.
I have not even seen the car in the flesh yet, only pictures.
Will try and keep steady as its all motorway back to Jocksville.
