Default my98 select monitor/obd almost cracked

just an update on the earlier select monitor connector location. i have searched the under dash compartment now countless times looking for the yellow connector but with no luck until now. i know that the 98 was the facelift year and that subaru were changing the ecu and diagnostics amongst all the dash and various other things so this has made things even more unclear. i have read a few posts regarding this issue and most say that if you have the new dash passanger air bag ect then you should have obd2 for diagnostics and all previous earlier models have the yellow connector under the dash. however i do have the obd2 compartment in the dash but no connector? but after looking around a while i pulled the fuse pocket open thats just above the obd2 compartment and to the right and there is the obd connector! this connector only has 5 pins with wires going to it and i am sure that true obd2 has around 16? i have looked on the old andrew carr web site on the ecu monitor and the connector for 98 on shows this connector but with a diagram for around 16 wires!Subaru ECU Monitor (click on the install link)
could this be because of the facelift and that they had started to convert to obd but not wired it fully yet so really its just the earlier version with the new style connector. sorry for the long thread but its the only way i could discribe it, thanks rich.

yer def 98 but not sure if this was true obd because there is only about a third of the pins in the connector being used. anyone reading this thread with my99 on if so could they have a quick look at their obd connector and tell us how many wires going to their's. this would be a great start. the ecu is the main difference though i think 98 was deff a sort of dog year for the impreza. damn subaru
