I have been have the exact same dilema 05STI or WR1. Coming from a slightly modded 01 WRX UK300 I would prob wish to mod a standard STI, say PPP & springs etc. AS from current ownership a modded car is always more to insure so would prob tend to swing towards a WR1 with all this standard. I have had quotes for WR1 cheeper than my uk300, plus it looks like the WR1's are still holding out in their prices.

I bought a late 04 STI (05 model) with PPP last month. I know the WR1 is a limited edition, extra power and goodies etc but I'm still not sure on the colour and I couldn't justify the price premium over my STI. Test drive them both (a good test drive that is) and make your mind up then . Which ever you choose you shouldn't be disappointed.
Happy hunting, Wolfie.

05 STI - as long as it's with the new suspension setup, far better than the fashion victim 'special' edition that you're expected to pay a premiun for. To top it all some monkey decided to spray the WR1 in the worlds most gay colour.

I wasn't keen on the colour of the WR1 at first, but now its grown on me and I really like it.
I'd get a WR1 and keep it standard, rather than buying an STi and modding it.
Of course the usual - mileage, servicing etc would come into consideration..
Have you seen any you are considering buying?

As long as the WR1 didn't have too many miles on the clock I would go for that. Think the colour is pretty cool, when you see them in the flesh, plus you get them rather tastey wheels.
Maybe come 5years time when you may sell it, I'm sure it will be a couple of grand more cos of the edition it is.

If you got a WR1 is would be best to keep standard. can you do that? Nerr, thought not, would have to be the 05 STi for me.
The premium & colour of the WR1 are not worth it IMO. Plus the 05 is a cracker. 05 STi in white for the looks, or black for being faster.

Or Wr Blue for a proper Scooby! (only joking).
Think the WR1 has 320bhp. True the 05 has different track width, but can it make a noticable difference when you drive it on normal roads?
Not slating the 05 far from it (I have one), just the WR1 having lots more ponies does sound good. The power is nothing that the 05 can't get though, so also bear that inmind!.

Nearly right, 320ps. Or approx 316bhp if I recall the correction correctly.
> JDM STI much better than a WR1
Yawn, yawn. Was going to come back with the normal warranty response but now the 3 years are up on the WR1's that's been and gone.

It's down to you yourself mate, if you like something special and don't mind the colour the WR1 is your man, but a MY05 with a Prodrive pack is a better option I think as you can pick the colour you most prefer, they all come with the dccd now so that doesn't matter and you won't have got that horrible front grill, although if you like them you can get one fitted to the 05. Best of look with your choice.

A similar question was posted in last months Evo by a reader. Evo rated the STI as a better car abd said the WR1 didn't live upto its claims.
Drive both and if you go for the WR1 keep it standard. I was looking at one and since the arrival of the RB320 I've seen a few around the £16k to £18k from independent dealers.
Whichever you go for I'm sure you'll not regret it.

a massive 17 posts before someone throws in the 'JDM better comment' must be a new record. (unlike the stuck one that import fans use. NOT EVERYONE WANTS AN IMPORT FFS!!!)
anyhoo, when i bought mine i really wanted a WR1 but they hold their money so well (or did at that time) that i just wasn't possible.
loads of goodies that make it into a great car, you can insure it as a std car so good on qoutes and unless you're a bit mad you'll not need alot more power and unless you're colin mcrae i don't suppose you'll notice the difference in the suspension setup to the 05.
do i love my 05 sti? yes. would i have prefered a WR1? yes
if you like the colour and have the cash that's the one i'd go for
