Default Wiring up an LED :wonder:

I went to maplin and got an LED with a resistor (12v iirc)

They told me how to wire it but i cant rememebr and i dont want to blow it.

It should display one colour (red) when there is power to the ignition (position 1/2) and then when the switch it activated to (position 3) the led should change colour (green)

Can i use the 12v resistor to earth the led from the longer pole and then connect the other two to the appropriate ignition switches ?

Thanks
Chris.

The resistor will be for the power feed in (id have thought ud need 2 though, on for each + in) and the one leg for earth....

Think thats about right!

its ok of earth. Only problem is when both are +ves are on at the sametime, current is limited, but you wont have them both on right ? so no issues really.
The polarity issue, if there are 2 +ves and a single earth, then their diode effects would sort out the polarity problems anyway.

Don't forget the resistor is just a current limiter in this case.

That's a common cathode Two colour LED, put the resistor on the middle wire and your +ve feeds on the outer Two.

I thought it would be rude to ask.

The led will have flat edge on the case (small but noticable). This indicates the cathode. The 12 volt supply needs to go to the other leg. The resistor can be on the anode side or cathode as its limiting the current to save the led from burning out.

Not in this case, the cathode is the middle pin
