MOT Fail.......
My MY 2002 WRX failed its MOT....emissions.....
It would appear that the Lambda(ish) sensor has packed up....engine warning light came on a few weeks ago.....does this mean my cat will be scrap too?
Been quoted about £350 for a 2nd hand cat and new sensor plus fitting.
Any thoughts/experiences?
Russ.

If the cat has died it`s time to use the i`m doing my bit for the enviroment line, by making my car more fuel economical. By replacing the downpipe with a high flow sports cat. And replace the rest with bits of pipe. Gentle remap later, and more smiles and better cruising fuel economy, every ones a winner.

Why not just buy one of the original exhausts sitting in a garage somewhere when the guys upgrade their original exhaust for something else? I was told that I'd be lucky to get £50 for mine if I sold it

Get fault code read (thats why the check engine light is on) - that will confirm which sesnor is at fault (presumably OS)
Replace OS sesnor (if the fault code confirms that)
Reset ECU
Go for a good drive, ensure light remains off.
Then check emissions
If ok, get MOT done, and away you go.
If not ok, ooerr, thats where I leave you in the lurch, too many variables, possibilities and outcomes to list in addition to the cat. Usually a cat is only on concern if it has melted or shattered and blocked up the exhaust...you'll know if it has

ISTR the newage jobbies have 2 lambdas. One up front to feedback into the ECU for mixture control and another one after the last cat to check the status of the cats and/or emissions.
i) I think you car's got more than one cat. It may have 2 or even 3 depending on model.
ii) I'd get the front lamdba/O2 sensor replaced, then get the emissions checked.
