Hi All,

I'm sure this has come up before (search down) but how about a "Do-It-Yourself" section. This could contain descriptions and possibly pictures (submitted by us) explaining how we did things like; change the spark plugs, change discs and pads etc.

Obviously, there would have to be a disclaimer stating that "you undertake this at your own risk ... blah, blah.

I for one would find this most helpful.

Mr Moderator, if you need someone to corilate this info then I can spend some time on it.

What so you think?

Cheers

Definitely a good idea - I'd love to be able to do stuff on my car on my own, and am highly tempted to go on one of those adult education car maintenance courses.

Problem is that everything is so computerised, I think I need to make use of my computing degree just to top up the washer bottle

OK, here's one for how to fit an intercooler splitter...

http://www.roobarb.fsnet.co.uk/subaru/splitter.html

I am putting one together for how to fit a centre console coffee cup holder to an MY98, it's a **** of a job!

I for one would use an area like that, not a topic but rather a dedicated area to list DIY tasks etc. The problem with trying to get it off the ground is that the people that you would need to contribute to the area don't need it - if you see what I mean

The hard work would not be so much in co-ordinating the area but getting the words and piccies in the first place, it would make a simple job a lot harder to keep stopping to take photos (and get oily finger prints on yer camera) and then have to write the job up as well.

On second thoughts how about an area to hold links to other sites that detail jobs, I've seen a link on here for ecu reset and there is another one above.

Hi dannyn,

You have a good point there, but knowing the wonderful people on this board and how helpful they are, I'm sure we can get them to share some their wisdom.

Cheers

I think it's a great idea and I would be happy to contribute anything I know (however limited that may be!).
I think most people actually get a buzz out of passing on knowledge and experience.

Bring it on I say!

I just stick all my mad DIY ideas in Drivetrain - they must be a longsuffering lot. So far they include restrictor valve to control boost, DIY AFR meter, electronic boost control.

But if you are meaning topics like how to change pads/discs/filters etc, then that might be good.

Guys,

I used to have a Fiat Coupe 20v turbo, the Coupe-Sport site has a good model set of how tos... I'd love to help with something like this:

http://homepages.tesco.net/~kaswalker/howto.htm

Hi John,

All that stuff would be good.

What we could do is give each "topic" a difficulty value so that we all have some idea how difficult each "how-to" is.

Cheers

Well, jobs I have done on mine:

Intercooler splitter (got the pics)
Coffee cup holder in centre console (got the pics)
ITG air filter (not got pics, but easy to redo)
Stereo head unit (not sure it is worth explaining)

There are also some good ICE fitting instructions on Chiark's web page, and i-club in the US has some good how tos for brake bits.

I guess we either want a set of how tos in a standard format, or a page with a link to ones out there on the net, and to create some new ones.

Have you read the latest SIDC True Grip? That has a 4 pot brake disassembly guide in it. Maybe the SIDC would be the right place to put these things?????

I am getting ADSL on Xmas eve, so updates to my site at http://www.crudworks.org should get more regular. I will also have a bit more space to host it with.

Simon.

I don't want my post above to sound negative. I think this would be a good idea, especially if it featured fitting instructions for common mods like Air Filter replacement such as the K&N fitting guide on chiark's site.

Tell you what, when I am bored and full of Christmas fare, I will pull together a page of what's out there and post the URL somewhere on Scoobynet.

If nothing else a collection of what is there may be useful!

Hi Simon,

That would be cool.

I'm planning on doing a few things over christmas. one of which is replacing my existing spoiler (MY97) for a MY99 STi4. So I'll right that up as well.

Hi All,

Ok, Seems that the general consensus is that this is a good idea. What do you think is the best way to implement it? Should we try and intergrate it within scoobynet (moderators you're call) or have an independant site with a link?

I personally would like to try and keep it part of scoobynet as there will be more traffic and therefore more chance of getting some good articles.

At this point, I'd just like to say that the moderators do an outstanding job on this site and the last thing I want to do is increase their already heavy commitment. So, if there's anything I can do to help, you just have to ask.

Cheers

For what it's worh I can detail how to change Your springs and dampers (fitted my own Eibachs), downpipe and other exhaust bits, and I'll soon be changing my clutch. If you think this forum is likely to happen I'll take some shots of the procedure.

Hi Neil,

I really would like this to happen. If not directly through scoobynet (any moderators out there?) then I'll knock up a website.

So please, take a few piccies and write a few words. They will get used.

Cheers

Think this is a great idea - just one suggestion to anyone thinking of contributing - tell us what went wrong and how you got around it. I've done limited DIY on previous cars (changed brake disks and similar) by following Haynes etc and am ok until the bolt seized / thread stripped / disk stuck / oh ****! scenario which always seems to happen (or is that only to me!!)

Cheers

Just to add my voice to this... It seems like an excellent idea, why not use the power of the web and do what Haynes never can and add video, that way it's much more self explanatory. You needn't do it for all the work but perhaps location of parts, illustration of problems etc.

Lets just make sure we don't include Haynes-isms, first remove the engine...

Hi Neno,

It's a good idea, but the logistics of actually doing it are not practical at the momment.

Excellent idea!!!

It is something that has been discussed before, and is something that would be a great benefit to the community.

If you would like to email me directly on shaun@scoobynet.co.uk , with your ideas/plan of action we'll see what can be done.

Regards,
Shaun.

Gazza, I asked this a few days ago, and thought it a great idea..and got zero response too! I have a digi camera and a half decent toolkit..and a scooby of course....would like to be involved...but am loathe to start trying to change sparkplugs etc when I can see how tricky they are going to be etc etc. Would like to help, but need some pointers.

I try to do this on my site - http://www.chiark.com - and have put up a K&N fitting guide, gauge guide, ICE guide, PIAA guide and other little bits.

More than happy to have them linked to.

And more than happy to take submissions?

OK Ga33a. I'll get my camera out!
If you need any write ups on the spring/damper changes then I have that already (have sent it out to a few people on this board and one guy from New Zealand said it worked for his pre-Impreza Legacy as well).
I didn't do anything on the DP but can if you want, although thinking about it, I'll probably have to remove the DP when changing the clutch anyway, so I can get some snaps then as well.
It's not going to be done until Jan/Feb next year as I want to make sure it's really cold before I start rolling around on a concrete floor dripping oil all over myself!

Neil.
