on the classic shape, what is so different that the wagon and saloon tail lights are different fitment? Do you think saloon tail lamps can be modified to fit the wagon? pretty sure the lights are the same shape...

The saloons are wider in fitment, so no go really.

Sadly, as above no go I am afraid but most supplers do aftermarket, including Aftermingers (sorry) don't like 'em!

on a slightly different note, i have seen Wagons with the Type R lights in the back, the ones with the white at the bottome? did some of the WRX or STI wagons come standard with these or are these an aftermarket light

Nice one. Yep they did. These are the best ones to uprate with IMHO.

The 4dr Saloon STi Lights will definitely NOT fit the 5dr Wagon.

The STi Wagons came with the 5dr/Wagon version of the STi Rear Lights... I fitted some to my old MY98 UK Wagon, they look like this:
