Underside of vents

Underside of vents
Hi all,
On the underside of my side vents on my 1997 uk turbo 2000 I have noticed covers bolted onto the bonnet, which pretty much stops airflow so there's no point in having them surely?
Just wondering, should I remove these covers or are they there to prevent water getting into the engine?
Cheers

Hi Mate, I was gonna take mine off too, but I've just fitted an induction kit so I thought better of it! I know what you mean tho, what's the point of having vents if you can't use them!?!?!?

I would think they are for track day use only, I wouldn't want to leave the covers off 24/7. Wouldn't think it would be too good for components to be drenched in rain!?!?!

Leave them on seems to be the general opinion

The vents are there purely for cosmetic value, hence the underside is covered up. Otherwise every time it rains your engine bay would get water going into it. Not ideal!
Some people with induction kits remove the vent an fit a mini scoop. Stops most of the rain getting in and flows more air to the induction kit. Better off with an induction kit that fits in the wing though with cold air feed.

Doesn't the 22B have vents (albeit bigger) that are uncovered?
I took mine off my classic, back in '97, even cut out some slats, leaving the middle two and put motorsport mesh underneath to lOOk like the 22B ones. Without knowing better.
It didn't cause any problems.

Take em off, I did 3 years ago and have never put them back winter or summer.
Never had any problems in fact when the engine is hot you can really see the heat haze coming out which can only be a good thing.
As somebody has already said, the 22B did not have covers underneath the vents and the layout in those engine bays is identical to the everyday WRX/STi's/UK turbos.
