Was it on Rollers or on the Road?

Did you or the Mapper have to pay for the Rebuild.

Just Wondering? It would be good to know before i think of getting mine done..

I would be very surprised if a Mapper paid for a rebuild

From people I have spoke with in the past, the resposibility and risks associated with tampering with your car are down to the owner

Exactly. Its the owners choice to have the engine mapping altered.
Chose your mapper carefully in other words!

I've had my engine blow on the rollers, and after some negotiation the owners they paid half the bill, even though they were negligent (they told me it might happen if they weren't careful, and then it did!). I have also had a gearbox let go when mapping on the road, hardly the mappers fault if he manages to get more torque out of the engine than the gearbox can cope with!

Perhaps some people should take careful note of the disclaimers some tuners have. Makes for interesting reading

One by me used to put it on the back of their invoice....err, ok, your car blows up, you get the bill, so only THEN you are able to take note of the disclaimer - after the event Bet that caught some people off-guard, they have since changed it now as they had too many chavs with shagged engines that kept blowing up - not the tuner's fault, it was knackered to start with.

And thats the thing, a weak/worn engine is generally a time bomb. The car owner and tuner can be totally oblivious to the engine's internal condition. It's only when the engine is put under stress that the failure will be more likely to rear its head, and rollers/live on road tuning can be stressful. So if the engine is on its way out, then thats the most likely time for it to fail.

Sonic,

True to a certain extent, but I believe reputable mappers are insured to cover damage to an individual's car. However, I would have thought this only applies if a technical fault or negligence at their end caused the failure.

Too many variables that they can't control (namely the car's previous condition) to offer to compensate should a car fail during a 'normal' mapping session.

That said, they do have access to a huge array of data via their tuning software, so it seems unlikely that a car would just go pop without some warning on one of the parameters they're monitoring first. If they see a danger sign, I dare say they'd abort the mapping!

Absolutely - I wouldnt even consider mapping changes with a mapper that was not monitoring, after all what would be the point ? To map you have to monitor the engine at all stages of what you are doing and keep it within safe boundaries.

Not heard of one going bang yet myself whilst mapping.

Some do go bang afterwards, but it is difficult to asses whether this is a previous weakness that would have let go anyway, abuse of the new found power without thinking about why an engine would let go or them ignoring advice with regards to the fuel to use etc.

Yes blown an engine up with a nitrous backfire on the rollers. Lifted the bonnet off its hinges, blew every gasket there was and the induction tract was in tatters all round the engine bay.

In the end I had a prototype turbo conversion and engine rebuild done at cost.

I reckon they are more likely to blow on the rollers due to the increased temperatures.

Bottom line is: If you don't want to put your car at risk, don't go on the rollers. It's just down to taking responsibility for your own decisions.

I know of one although it was not during mapping, Dec02/Jan03

Me a freind, who like had the first batch 02 STiPPP fitted went to Complain "it didn't do what it said on the Tin"

I believe something like Delta dash, a laptop was plugged in to monitor the cars performance on their long test track, as they did with mine the previous month . Unfortunately my friends 02 on the High speed run the Engine let go

The engine was rebuilt FOC hence the Fuel pump fitting with PPP

IIRC
