Question Garage charging £1597 for gearbox rebuild

Hi,

After having some really bad luck I have had to have a gearbox rebuild on my 96 impreza wrx ltd edition import.

Just wanted to see if people think im getting ripped off of whether it is about the right price?

Thanks In Advance.

Get another couple of quotes from other garages, then you'll know if your first quote is a fair or rip-off price.

Does seem alot of money though.

I got quoted less than that for a gearbox rebuild (not complete just the parts required),new clutch and flywheel.

Its a full gear box rebuild - I am stuffed AA recommended the garage and they are being idiots price started at £937 and now the rebuild company that they have sent it off too are saying that with parts and labour and to put the box back in we are looking at that 1500 figure.

I am so gutted only had the car for a day and this happens. Not a good start to my subaru ownership.

Had the guy in the garage also say to me that he is looking forward to road testing my car and smiled. I am so worried that they will end up stuffin it into a ditch.

Ill keep you all informed if your intrested however I can safely say that I wont be having any work done at this garage ever again.

Cheers

Chris

please do keep us informed.
If he does 'road test' your car it should be covered by his/their insurance (ok not much good if they do crash it but at least you should be covered).

Get a comparative quote from Zen performance, that seems high to me if standard internals are used.

I'll 2nd that!! Contact David for a chat. They're specialists and won't make you feel so bad with parting with your cash.

PS. On driving back my very first WRX from Cornwall to London the gearboax went on me just 1 mile from home. These things happen.

Regards

Spoken to the guys you recommended and they said that due to the nature of the work that is being done to the gearbox they think its a fairly competitive price.

Im still not sure however I just want my car back in one piece and be able to enjoy it again, has been in there garage for over a week now and have been advised that I am going to have to wait atleast another 4 days.

Is there anyone in the Berkshire area on here as I would like to privatly warn them about this garage.

Cheers
Chris

A SecondHand Box is a BIG risk ..... is it any good? How has it been treated? It's ok if you can drive the car then remove it, but thats rare.

I'm near Berkshire, pm me their name ..... a gearbox rebuild is a simple job - £500 tops ... if its just the bearings gone and to 'dress' up a couple of gears.

Nobody has spoken to me about this.

A recon box in our exchange programme with a 6 months warranty - for that age car; is £650.00 + VAT. In / out labour is £200.00 + VAT That's a bit less than a grand inc VAT.

If the £1597.00 perhaps includes a clutch and flywheel AND VAT then it is high-ish by perhaps 200 quid, but dependant upon which clutch fitted.

Why are the AA involved in this?

If you are paying then get the gearbox to a Subaru specialist.

Did you buy the car from a trade seller? If so, then under the Sale of Goods Act they are responsible for cost of repair on a defect ocurring so soon after sale.

Alyn at AS Performance did a gearbox swap on my old V2 STI. Think it was £500 for a recon box and about £150-£200 fitting for labour.

They seem like reasonable numbers and what I would expect

Even if API, as you say, had quoted about the same price, they'd still be the best bet by a long way. Dave (the boss) has said he can do it for less, all in, so it's now a no-brainer...
