Get hand stuck between head and inner wing
Smell burning flesh as hand is melted on head.
Remove smoked hand whilst leaving knuckle skin on various sharp sticky-out bits.
Swear to Subaru designers and the stubborn plug thats still happily in location.
Repeat until all plugs are removed or you die from bloodloss.

I haven't tried one myself yet but I guess it can be a bit messy without a ramp due to the 'splash guard' (oil trickles on the inner part of the guard) and the location of the sump plug.
Do you jack the car up or have access to any sort of ramp to do this?
In my 205 it is very easy to change the oil as the sump plug can be reached very easily but I doubt it's the same story for the impreza.
I see no need filling up the oil filter either -despite the posts I have read-. If the manual doesn't mention it simply doesn't need doing. I have done numerous oil changes in my previous cars using normal procedure without any problems.

Would like to attempt to do this on my classic but I just look at the engine bay and think where do you start? anyone have a good guide with pics to show where the filter and sump plug are?
Is it not a good thing to use a non Subaru oil filter? is there that much difference?

Who the hell posts pointless crap like changing their oil on internet forums? I had a dump earlier. Didn't feel the need to broadcast that fact at the time... but perhaps I should have done. Might stick the telly on when I get back from work and have dinner. So you changed your OWN oil. Who the f**k cares?

I said Subaru Oil Filter - since when has that been a poor pattern part?
The Oil is as comes recommended by the Independent Mechanics round here who service High Performance Vehicles ....... you be a mug and hand over wedges of cash if you want

The ***** on here tell you to remove Crank Sensor, remove Spark Plugs, remove rear parcel shelf and remove front seats BEFORE starting the enigine after an Oil change see??????
And, when I did my first DIY Oil Change on the Scooby in the Summer of 2005 it was forecast that I would smash my engine up within 50 miles because I didn't abide by the warnings of the ***** ....... I just changed the Oil like the Main Dealers do and used Oil to Subarus Specification
About 27,000 miles later she is still running sweet as a nut and as smooth as a babies botty!!
Hard evidence that 'Special Oil' at £45 per 4 Litres and **** Procedures are what they appear to all 'Normal' people .......... MYTHS and BOLLOX
All in my experience and opinion, as always

16 years ago I stopped a guy filling his triumph TR6 with oil as when he put it in it pi55ed out the sump has he had forgotten to fit the SUMP PLUG.
Yes Pete takes the pi55 but everybody makes mistakes. I pre-fill the filter as matter of course due to my job where a oil filter holds at least a litre of oil, on the scooby it passes the time whilst the oil drains. Take your pick on what you do I have never disconnected the CAM or CRANK sensor start her up and allow to idle. 60 thou pushing 360 brake with daily short runs no oil smoke or blown engine.

to the man asking wether you need a ramp - no , i dont even use a jack let alone a lift. its all easy peasy to get the cover off and get to the filter / sump plug.
