What is a new MY00 worth?
#1
What do people think the old stock of MY00s will eventually be selling for.
While the reception for the MY01 has been luke warm, there is no doubt that residuals will be substantially better than for the outgoing model.
Even at £19k, extras like CD, air and a set of 17" wheels will take the price over that of a MY01 on which all of these items are standard.
I imagine that most people who appreciate the benefits of the old model over the new will already have an Impreza and will just keep it.
Any thoughts?

simple supply and demand.
There are more scoobs than there have ever been available before. So supply is high, demand may have been dampened by:
1) limited market (only so many petrol heads - unlikely)
2) Insurance Costs
3) Many cars for sale - flooding market (look at recent threads saying how difficult scoobs (and in general all 2nd hand cars) are getting to sell - are we heading the same way as japan - once 3 years is reached ditch it and buy a nice shiny new one.)
4) Are IM still limited with import quotas - like the good ol' days (suba what ???) Increasing supply.
5) Rising petrol prices
6) Worried about security issues, theft, secure parking etc.
Despite all of the above, IMHO, it is still the greatest performance car/everyday practical car for the money. fullstop.
A definite victim of its own sucess.

Pre MY01 Scoobs will not hold their values. The Escort Cossie and Lania Delta have done well because Ford and Lancia have not yet released a replacement performance model. The Cossie's will alos drop like a lead balloon if Ford releases a real performance Focos - Just look how the Escort killed the Sierra Cosie values.
Personally I still prefer the old model. I will soon have to decide whether I get a new MY01 or the last of the old "real" Imprezas.

Give us another couple of weeks and I'll be able to give a "genuine" owners view of the new model. I dare say the MY01 will not be "perfect" first time but then again, neither was the old model from day one. Having gone through a couple of cars myself. While accepting peoples views etc. I still can't think of any other car I want!
Hopefully should get the new motor before Xmas. If not, then 1st week in the new year.
Like most things in life, it's a gamble... but then again, I'm a great gambler!
Enjoy folks.... because I know that I do.

Mike,
I agree that no new model is perfect, and like all manufacturers, I'm pretty sure they will make some modifications/improvements over the next 6 - 12 months.
Personally, I didn't want to get stuck with one of the early versions, which is why I opted to replace my '98 with a P1.
Having said that, I'm sure I'll look at a WRX in 18 months or so. So I for one, would be very interest to know how 01 owners get on with their cars.

We have taken orders for a few MY01's so when the cars are delivered, I'll give the owners a chance to get some miles under their belt then post some of their views if anyone is interested.
thanks

I'm not sure I agree about residuals being weaker on MY00s. Many people think of the MY00 as the last of the real thing. If early changes are made to the MY01 which is possible, the first batch will lose value.
Just done 1000 miles in my new MY00, and don't regret the decision at all. While I was having the first service, I had a look at my dealer's first MY01 alongside their MY00 demonstrator (PPP). The new one looks disjointed and weak. The old one has a coherence in all the detail and overall shape, and looks much more purposeful.
The new model is aimed at a broader market now the import restrictions are gone. It will trade on the reputation of the old model, but appeal to those who thought it a bit uncompromising. I think Subaru have got it wrong with the styling though. Just as the market has finally tired of bland Jap styling, and everyone wants concept car looks, they've gone bland. The old model got criticised for quirky styling, but it got noticed, aided by a brilliant bit of rally icon making.
The face has changed. Where the old one has an assured samurai smirk, the new one is pure cutesy Jap Anime cartoon - very suspect :-)
