Default Legal Tints?

Does any one know what the official penalty is for having tinted front windows in a car?

A mate of mine got a 30 pound fixed penalty for having his dark smoked in the front, but I have heard of someone getting 3 points PER window!!

Surely the police officer can't decide there and then whether he/she 'feels like' giving you a 30 quid fine or points?

Cheers

£30 fixed penalty ticket only (No points). If deemed so bad, a prohibition notice can be put on your car resulting in it being taken off the road.

Interesting. I want my windows tinted but have been told, as they already have a slight tint, I would be illegal if I had them done

You're allowed upto a 30% tint on your front windows, the rear ones can basically be opaque. Most modern cars or replacement windows if already tinted will tell you the transparency on them (usually where the manufacturer details/ISO number etc is). For example my Astra says it's 70% transparent, which means I couldn't legally apply any tints.

I guess it's a case of being honest about how ugly you are. I am beautiful and so chose not to tint my windows as I want to be seen driving my car...
I have always presumed (maybe wrongly) that blacked out (dark tinted) front windows are an indication that the driver looks like Pug from the Bash Street Kids...

In theory all film type tints aren't legal if applied to front, side windows.

Even security type films are dubious because of the wording of the current legislation.

I think it's a stupid law to have and typical of England as they make another thing illegal. You don't see them banning tints in the front windows in America or anywhere els...

You wont be able to have a fart with out it being illegal soon!
