There's one in a village near me, with a "30mph slow down" warning - this doesn't trigger my Bel Euro 550 though
Dunno - maybe it works off pads in the road?

It is probably not a speed camera, and i think that they are a great idea because you do take notice - much more than with hidden traps.
What i can't fathom out, is how they work - because my radar detector never spots 'em?

Ive seen these b4 on the north wales coast road, just b4 you go into the conway tunnel (dont think they are speed cameras as i would have lost me licence by now) but i try and slow down anyway.
never seen on with a flash thou
these would be great on approaches to schools etc....

Hey Steve on about the Conway Tunnel I go through there quite often and always slowed down to the "50" limit, however locals would always be zooming past me etc.... and I never once saw one of the many cameras flash(This was before i had my Bel550),I happened to mention this to a m8 who live near there and he said oh them 50mph speed limit signs are only advisory cos they're written in black its only the red ones that are mandatory
Is this correct cos sadly I dont own a highway code book and have only ever had to read it the once , in which it was burned the following evening

My sister has one of those 'Slow Down' signs near her.
They are a warning sign (in the case of this particular on - it does hae a radar gun on top) and no prosecution is done. Either that or everyone in that area is about to lose their licences.
I also like these signs people seem to take notice of them more. By far the best name and shame sign ever was one I triggered years back in Leeds. Going around a roundabout in a ZX faster than the speed signs indicated (road works putting a lower limit up) a sign lit up 'Slow Down J678***'. At once the speed dropped and everyone in the car went quiet!

yeah I've seen em near Cambridge. I got the flashing sign too but never got any comeback off it. I think they are another deterrent deal. You are prolly in the clear.

I have heard the same thing... shame really as it really dod slow me down.
If I remember the one with the registration display was in a 20 and I was doing 25-30 but it is going back a few years now.
It would be quite canny f a force to have a police unit watching the sign and when it goes of nick the boy racers!

What do you mean by 'flashed.' If the writing flashed up you'll probably be OK. If there was a flash of light it can only mean the thing was trying to photograph you as evidence for a conviction.

Don't worry - they're harmless. There are some near me positioned in effect to warn you about a bad bend (you can trigger them whilst doing the speed limit). Always disappointed if I don't trigger them! They never have cameras attached to them (they can't distract you whilst doing you for speeding).
The authorities are wising up now. I remember one in Derbyshire that also flashed up your speed. It was soon taken down again after the residents complained about all the local hooligans seeing it as a challenge to see who could get the highest score!

Know the camera - got some friends about a mile away in Holt. They have had a lot of bad accidents on the junction where that sign is fitted so that was the answer apparently!!! Definately not a speed trap though.

Got one of these as you approach the village of five oak green from Tonbridge. This one is not attached to speed camera, just a warning. have also seen mobile ones as well.
Some of them *might* be attached to cameras, or if mobile ones, have plod nearby to chase you down like the murdering scum you are, umm, sorry, got a bit carried away there, thought we were talking about real hardcore criminals rather than speeders
seriously though, probably not a speed camera per-se.
as an aside, some people my brother knows have a bit of a laff with these things, seeing the highest speed they can get them to register, then someone takes a photo of it, sad I know.

Theres a website with piccies of all the different roadside cameras and other equipment and explains what they all do exactly. I cant remember the address though does anyone on here have it?

Paul S. - thanks for the reassurance.
I agree that they are most welcome in place of the traps !
BoostII -`flashed`- came around the corner to face a barrage of light; only when I refocussed did I see the colour red. Slightly offputing, it may be better sited before the bend as the junction is not far after it.
Thanks everyone
