on the way to work this morning a red rs turbo came up behind me, and i thought here's another lax power boy racer.I also thought I'll pull away from him after next roundabout. Wrong....
once round the roundabout floored it and guess who's still right up my chuff. wound the car up to... hmm, 60mph officer, and he's still there. must have been heavily modded. I thought he was going to go past me.
Best I start modding the scooby very soon.
Never had that happen to me before not even with M3's (old shape).
respect to the rs turbo.
how many horses can you get out of a 1.6 engine.

Are you an RS forum imposter?

If not I apologise; it is quite possible to get a lot out nof a 1.6 turbo and with fwd there is less transmission power loss so once traction isnt a problem ie 45 mph onwards he could quite possibly be up your chuff in a straight line. He d struggle out of bends and in the wet tho.

It is volvo T5's that you need to worry about in a straight line on motorways. A few mods will sort those out though as one found out to his cost once on the A1, accelerating from one of those roundabouts near Sandy...

You can get about 300 bhp I think out of a 1.6 and alot of modded rs turbos are running 2 litre american cvh blocks or now they are running 2 litre zetec blocks with cvh head (i think ) they are getting quick though and I have seen 300 + bhp (true or not who knows?) running into 5 second 0-60 times at airfield track days . Still front wheel drive though so no fun on bends. give me rear or 4 wheel drive any day

not an imposter - well maybe at the minute as I've just picked up the loaner... (vauxhall corsa) from dealer as my rb5 is having it's 37K service.
Just really suprised he was gaining on me when I was flat out.

The RB5 has extra power over a standard scoob doesn't it?

"transmission power loss" - most over used phrase when comparing scoobies to some other motor!!!

Well I own an RST and happen to have claimed a few scooby scalps over the years. Don't take this is a free for all to start slagging things off, I like all fast cars whatever the marque, but some scoobs in standard form aren't a match for a fully loaded RST.

Sure there are some pretenders with their dump valves and K&Ns that think their cars are up to it, but we all know they're not.

A stage 1 escort turbo will beat a uk scooby in a straight line, easily!. its the loss in transmition thats kills the scooby's power. 208 bhp of the scobby against the 170bhp of an escort. escort is light aswell.

A good well modded escort turbo would see of wrx's and all sorts, in a straight line Give it a bend and say good bye.

But then again its all about the driver.

personally in this contry and climate i would stick with a 4x4 but i chose to be silly and have gone 2wd for the pure fun of it.

I dont mean this to turn into a my cars better than yours thred.

Cool

Thing is though the last Escort RS Turbos were on a H plate which makes them nearly 11 years old now. My friend has a completely standard one which has 142,000 miles on the clock which I drove for the first time last week.

What did I think of it?? Woof Woof

He is currently throwing money at it to keep it on the road he spent £500 in an attempt to get it running properly (which it still doesn't) and it just failed it's MOT due to rust around the front suspension turret and holes in the floor pan.

Would I want to own one? no thank you, old cars are crap.

These are all such well rehearsed arguments! i wonder which car will be chosen tomorrow to base the daily tussle on?

Ferrari?
Morris Ital (Modified)?
Seat Leon 20VT?
Model T Ford?

I got worried a few weeks ago by a Maestro of all things... I mean honestly.....

He over took me on a dual carrage way. Tooked in behind a truck, then flew past. Each gear change followed by a lovely flash of flame. Approaching a roundabout he lifted with a serious amount of flame on the overun. (AntiLag !!)

Chatted as we queued for the roundabout. Running 2.5bar boost (35 PSI) with FMIC, Cosworth pistons and Motec engine management. Hows about the for THE ultimate Q car. Looked totally standard (apart from the flames and pop n banging of the ALS)

A total nutter

Similar thing happened to me the other month.
This time it was some kid in a lowered Mk3 golf who'd been right up my **** for about a mile, so as soon as i thought the road was safe enough i nailed it. He stayed right with me!!!
Surely even a VR6 would have trouble keeping up.
To make matters worse, he pulled into a different lane at some traffic lights and i noticed that he had a tow-bar!!!

Shamed by a golf with a tow-bar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say, i felt the need to modify my scoob abit more since then.

There is some young **** who hangs around Southend way in an RS Turbot and a couple of times he has hung around waiting for me to drive by so that he can "'ave a go". He hovers right up your tailpipe slipstreaming you and probably in 3rd gear trying to prove that he can stick with you if you try to get away.
The 2 times it has happened my girlfriend was in the car with me so any racing was an absolute no-no!
Both times I just squeezed the throttle in 5th gear to put a little distance between us (so that I can see his lights!) before pulling over to let the w@nker past.
As he goes by he punches the air with glee as if he's claimed a scalp!!
The kid just doesn't consider how dangerous he is driving or that some people just aren't impressed by trying to outdrag each other in a straight line and ending up at speeds well in excess of 100mph before any meaningful difference is noticed.
I think it's all born out of the fact that there are still a lot of older more sensible Scooby drivers around compared to the Max Power brigade (although I must admit that the temptation to drop a couple of cogs and toast him was on my mind the second time )

Neil.

Yeah the RST might be good in a straight line (hhmmmm thats fun!), but the superior traction of 4wd will have beat by the time you have wheel span your *** off the line, beat you to the next round about/traffic lights.

11 year old bunch of *** mate! IMHO of course

Just thought I'd add this, as I nearly got caught out!
My mate "Sensible Pete" went out a few months ago and bought himself a Seat Ibiza 20v Turbo (not my cup of tea!), then the sly old goat took himself upto AMD and had it chipped. It now churns out 194BHP and a staggering 240lb/ft of tourque...Unless it's wet I can't lose the guy!!

What has the age of the car got to do with this post? Nothing! My car is 11 years old and it sailed through it's last MOT with only a CV boot that needed to be replaced. Yes scoobs have 4 WD but can't people handle being beaten on here? Too many egos methinks...

What has age got to do with it? Well I want to drive something that is nice and easy to drive and where all the controls feel nice and tight. Reliability is pretty important too, I want something that is going to start in the morning and doesn't have to have something replaced every month or so.

RS turbo doesn't even have power steering, who wants to drive a car without power steering these days?

Sorry to say this but old cars are not as nice to drive as a new car, else why would people bother to get new ones?

I've got alot of respect for someone who have modified their rs turbos etc, to keep up with, or even beat imprezas.
I was the same a few years ago but the reliability issue ended up getting me down. I know how much time and effort these blokes put into modifying their pride and joy.

If thats your bag, good luck to yer!
Just don't drive like ********, coz thats what gives the RS's a bad reputation. Shame really.

As for the age issue. I used to drive my mates 9 year old Escort Cos quite a bit, and although it was quicker than my scoob, it felt so horrible and old to drive, and it only had 50k on the clock.
It was always a pleasure to get back into my 2 year old, less powerful but more driveable scoob!
