Does anyone have 'flow rate' figures for the various backboxes available? - Scoobysport, Scorpion, Prodrive PPP, Magnex, HKS, BPM???

TIA

Pete Croney - Scoobysport ???

Mike Wood - Prodrive ???

Greg Niko.... - BPM

Whoever - Scorpion, Magnex, HKS ???

Do you guys not know the performance of your products, or just not prepared to say? Is no-one prepared to put their performance where their mouth is??

Surely this is a major factor in what Backbox to get? - he with the greatest flow rate gets my business!

Surely they know, but it's not all about what has got the biggest flow rate is it?

My limited knowledge says that flow rate will be important when the turbos up and spinning, but off boost you need back pressure to make the engine work.

Given that there's always going to be some form of compromise, if I were a manufacturer I wouldn't release the figure as that's a competetive element of my product.

Saying this, I have the mechanical knowledge of a dead stoat, so feel free to shoot me down.

Good point Chiark, it would be nice to know what benefits what and what does what..???? I'm not sure the Backbox does anything for back pressure though??

Mike Wood stated that he thought the PPP backbox was very similar to the Sccobysport one in performance, but couldn't say for sure as he didn't know what the scoobysport's flow rate was??

Seemed like a good starting point, but I guess manufacturers can't know the perofmance or just don't want to enter stand up comparisions?

Shouldn't this be in the exhaust section?

PeteC,

Can't you make your BB's any cheaper? I want one badly. How can a box with some baffles cost so much! The rest of the system is good value. I want that ScoobySport noise.

Have you thought of doing 0%finace? as not everyone rolls around with cash falling out of their pockets. Well, my pockets are not loaded with cash. I hate having to save.

And with 0% finance, there is a great probability that I would buy other things aswell.

Whadya reckon Mr Croney?

P.

Would love a Scoobysport back box, but agree with Sith they just seem so expensive.

I can get a 2nd hand Prodrive (PPP) backbox for £150 (£200 with PPP de-cat centre section too!), and the Scorpion, Magnex, etc are around the £200 mark. The Scoobysport one is not far off twice the cost of the others? With no flow rate figures to 'prove' it is twice as good, it just seems a better bet to go for either the 2nd hand Prodrive or the Scorpion?

From listening at the meets, the SS one is nice, but the Prodrive one seems to sound just as nice, as did the one Scorpion one there? And with the scorpion being 4" as opposed to the SS and Prodrive 3" is it safe to assume it's flow rate/performance should be better?

Well, i'll just say this.

1) When i swapped the Prodrive back box on my MY99 UK to a SS Box, i definetely noticed the difference.

2) Had a Scorpion exhaust on a previous car and the quality was terrible. Ever heard that being said of a Scoobysport box?

If youre going to do it, do it properly..........

Dave,
Not exactly an impetuous chap are you.

You were asking which is the best back box, 5 MONTHS AGO, and each person that replied told you that they give very little power increase, but sound better.

Just bite your lip, spend you £200/300 and start enjoying NOW.
Class it as your Christmas treat to yourself.

All summer you could hve been playing at being a Group N rally car (your first post stated thats the sound you were after).

Cheers MTR

Stef,
Thanks for the welcome.
Never went away, just resting.
Would have come down to Donnington on Sunday, but I am recuperating after an operation.
Catch you again.

Thanks for all the responses - even though still no-one seems to be able to answer the original question!

MTR - Impetuosity isn't really the problem, just cashflow! When I looked a few months ago, the SS box seemed the only option anyone could recommend, and I simply couldn't afford nor justify £350+ then. Finances are a little better now, but inbred northern mean-ness has taken over, I have more sense than money, and have heard a range of different makes!

Is the Scoobysport model really £150-200 better than the others? or is it the 'Mercedes Benz perceived value' syndrome of the SS brand name?

If Steve has had 35000 miles out of his 'cheap n cheerful' brand, Stef seems to rate the same 'crap' brand, and his car if anyones is surely subjected to a 'serious' life

If there is no real performance gain to be had from one B/B over another, and by the sounds of it, the (perceived?) quality of the cheaper make is more than good enough for most mortals, what is there to persuade me to lay out an extra £150/200 to follow the masses to the SS box??

Thumbs up

Dave,

I'm not the worlds greatest expert on technical matters, but there are two things that I do know:

1. I've got a SS box which was fitted by my brother who works at a garage and has fitted all sorts of systems to all sorts of cars - he reckoned that the SS was the best he'd ever seen - both in quality and fit. I appreciate that it doesn't help compare specific ones.

2. My brother-in-law has got an EVO6 with a Ralliart system, and at least a 4" rear pipe, and whilst his is louder at idle, once your on the move the SS is much louder - I expect that this may have something to do with the engine as well.

I've had the SS box for 12 months or so now, and love it - sounds absolutely brilliant, and I'd recommend it.

Just what you need - some more inconclusive opinions - happy hunting!!!!!!!

Matt

Dave,
I am as tight as they come, but the resale value of a SS back box £200 against the new price of £310 + delivery about £7 I think makes it a financially reasonable proposition.
Also the SS box, is not intrusive in the car, which was a very important consideration for myself,(the wife), whereas posts I had read on the 3.5" Magnex (my initial choice) indicated that it was loud in the car.
The SS box is is made from what appears to be substantial gauge material, and deadens the resonence that you would expect from a 'noisy' exhaust.

From outside when being hammered away from you, it sounds wonderful, yet at the same time does not blow your eardrums out, inside the car. If the Magnex gives similar sound levels in the car, then maybe its a better option, just on price alone.

Cheers MTR

Question

How much louder does the exhaust get without 'cats' and SS d/p added, over just a SS backbox?

Is it significantly louder inside as well?

The reason I ask is that I have a small child passenger who may complain....

Floyd,
A friend of mine has the PE downpipe, SS non silenced mid section and SS back box. ITS LOUD. And when you welly it, its EVEN LOUDER.
After driving his car, my Std downpipe, Magnex silenced mid section, and SS back box equipped car sounded like a std Nissan Micra in comparison.

Its a nice warm kind of noise, but wether you could live with it full time !!!

Cheers MTR

Pah, up the lot of ya .

Steve Yeowart, i am more often right than you are, shall we go back and count how many times you have been wrong, probably the same amount of times you have actually bothered to post anything, air filter change etc etc etc, didnt you also say something very incorrect about the PPP too recently?> Now youve attested to Scorpion quality, i hope yours doesnt develop a dodgy weld and fall off tommorow

Pete Lewis, what backbox have you got then?

Stef, Scorpion PLOPS

Dave Tit-Sucker, Scoobies werent designed to be driven round a track like a touring car, they were designed for off road rally, so why dont you take yours "off road" and stick it upside one of your wonderful North Essex tree stumps
