Fast car for under a grand?
I'm thinking about getting myself a cheap car for under a grand to use on trackdays (and maybe occasional road use when my other car's garaged).
Any recomendations? Ideally it will be reasonably quick to start with and easily tunable. An older Jap turbo would be ideal, but I cant think of anything that might be near that price.
Cheers.

Mate of mine got a 16V Clio with harnesses, trick suspension and uprated brakes, spare set of alloys 150k on the clock for £700. Cost him a service and nothing else for 4track days at Ty Croes.

e30 325, could get an e36 for 1500 easy (even a nice one if you hunt around)
205 gti for the handling
can even get saxo vtr's (maybe even a vts) for that money now too!
edit, didn't read the bit about being easily tunable....best stick to tuebo something if it's important eh..

I bought a Legacy Turbo for £1000 a few years back, for track days.
It came with Impreza STi 3 suspension and had 4 pot brakes fitted.
I never used it on the road as I stripped it out and fitted a roll cage, but it went well with a good exhaust and boost increase.
I sold it for the same £1000 2 years later, and I've now got a WRX ra, again purely for track days.

TBH for under a grand you should be looking more for reliability and cheap-to-replace parts rather than outright pace. IMHO I'd leave Japanese motors well alone and turbocharged ones even more so. Not that they're inherently unreliable but just that you see a lot of old nails for that kind of money and they cost a lot to fix if they go wrong. Stick to leggy hot hatches and you can't go far wrong i.e. Clio 16v, 205 GTi.

Not a track car though - heavy slow and wobbly - plus you would be shunned for trying to track one!
How about a Mk1 golf Rallye or GTi?

LOL Correct me if I'm wrong but he's gonna struggle to pick up a Mk 1 in any kind of decent nick for less than a grand? Although I like the Golf idea, probably a mk2 8v is more realistic on a three figure budget. Or go for a Scirocco, which can be picked up for peanuts, are rare on the roads, look cool and are just as solid twenty years on.
Or an E30-shape 3-series? You won't get anything too tasty like a 325i Sport or a 318is but something workaday like a 320i could be affordable?

Defo go an E30 like someone has alread said. You should get a 320 for a grand, and they handle pretty good.
Check out my 325i Sport tech 1 that I had a few year back....best car I've ever owned, you don't find E reg cars in this condition any more

Rover tomcat turbo, I paid £1100 for it, and it was rapid, 200bhp standard, can even wind up the boost on it manually with just some crappy valve, and if it blows up (which it will do), you dont care lol.
What a car!

The Tomcat looks pretty good. Out of the ideas suggested so far it seems to be the only one where I can find a reasonable example for under a grand.
I've seen Legacy estate turbo's for about a grand, one or two (allegedly) kicking out 300bhp! Not sure if it would be much kop on track though. I'm assuming DC59's car wasn't an estate?
