Newbie needing advice. Where's the best place to go for a short block for an STI 2001
Hi,
I have a problem, my STI import block is knackered and i want to know how much i will need to pay for a short block, either a 2.5 or as was mine a 2.0 block. Some of the prices i have been quoted seem very high, i.e £1600.
My own fault adding a couple of mods and not re-mapping!
Any advice appreciated!

Thats not a bad price
a full rebuild anywhere will cost you about 4k so take that into consideration!

I only mentioned the 2.5L as it seems to be cheaper than the 2.0L?
Why do you say the 2.0L would be better than the 2.5L??
Also, would the heads need to be changed? As a rule of thumb do the heads generally get damaged when a piston goes pop???

Why don't you take it back to your mechanic with the very good reputation for another rebuild ?
And what exactly is wrong with 'the block' in order for you to replace it rather than rebuild using the existing one

Have a classic WRX but the engine went pop for whatever reason. Had someone do a rebuild for me and he came with a good reputation and a friend recommended him to me. However, my mate didn't know the engine builder had money problems. I paid him bit by bit for parts he was replacing. Only to find out he had spent my money on other things and not my engine. Currently going through civil court to get my money back.
Got bored of waiting so i bought an import STI, had it checked over by a mechanic and all was fine. Had the oil, filter and cam belt changed to be sure. Then fitted a de-cat exhaust and induction kit. Had it dynoed, Powerstation said the fueling was ok. Two weeks later it went pop. And this is where i am today. In the sh*t so to speak.

There is a VERY important lesson that you've found out about the hard way:
Get the job done right, pay once!!!
If you try and get a job done for peanuts, expect monkeys to work on the car. A decent rebuild WILL be a susbstantial amount of money and that's all there is to it I'm afraid.
Why not give David another ring and ask for a quote for a 2 ltr rebuild.
