Hi Topper,

The downpipe will effect the emmisions because it will remove one of the cats. However, if the centre pipe is left in place the cat in there should keep you legal(ish).

Don't hold me to that. Alot will depend on how efficiently the engine's working.

Well worth doing though

Cheers

on a 95 you will also have a lmabda sensor in the headers, they need replacing at that age anyway let alone when they are in the hottest part of the exhaust. With a didgy lambda sensor you will not pass mots, probably even with the cats in place. If running only the second cat with a working lambda sensor it is will need to be preheated before the test to stand a chance.

A lambda sensor will measure the ratios of CO and CO2 and Oxygen in your exhaust fumes before they go through the Catalyst. If they are too high or low and it is a very small band, the ECU will compensate for this by varying the amount of fuel being injected into the engine. You need a lambda sensor to work, otherwise the catalyst has no chance of working.

Secondly a catalyst will only work once it has reached a set temperature, I can't remember exactly but about 450 degrees is not far off, so pretty bloody hot. Until its at that temperature its useless. What car manufacturers do now is they put small catalysts near the engine, or in this case in the exhaust manifold so that it will heat up more quickly, and start working. If you remove this cat, you only have the other catalyst further away from the engine to rely on, which will need probably 5-10mins of driving to warm up. If you get your car MOT tested and the cat is not warm, you will fail the emissions test.

Hopefully this helps a bit
