Unhappy Do Bugeyes have a weak number four piston???

I have recently bought an import Bugeye STI MY01, I have been told the number four piston is prone to breaking down. Is this right??
Is there anything i can do to stop it going?? Only sensible answers please!

I think you may have mis-heard. It's piston 3 that is the one more prone to failure on the subaru engine, and I don't think there's anything different about bugeyes - they're basically the same short motor anyway.

Melted/pitted pistons (any cylinder) can be caused by detonation (weak mixture) and is more commonly seen on modded cars where the ecu hasn't been remapped to support the mods. Common candidates are decatting and induction kits without a remap - esp if coupled with runnin lower octane fuel.

I think if memory serves me piston 3 is more prone because it sits at the end of the fuel rail, which is why some ppl fit a parallel fuel rail.

Piston 3 is furthest away from the oil pump so any drop in oil pressure will be felt here the hardest.

In addition to all that No 3 has the up-pipe running alongside so it is also the hottest (hence wrapping a decat up-pipe).

Think FunkySpider has said all there is.

If you don't want it happening, use his mentioned precautions. Or don't mod, or make sure you always map in mods.

I learnt the hard way on my classic. Cherr-ching £4k engine after fitting an induction kit.

There about £120

Perhaps better to upgraded Fuel pump and regulator first for simular cost they did have issues on the first bugeyes pumps, so Prodrive allways fitted Pumps with their PPP kit's. Long high speed runs and fuel pressure drops, as said, No 3 furthest away get the greatist Pressure drop.

If pressure can be maintained not so great need for Parrallel rail.

IIRC Also the newageMAF's are better, bottom ends have been improved

IMHO

None of the mappers I have spoken to will take any WRX beyond a mild remap of 260ish on standard fuel pump. For the 70quid it costs for a walbro and an hour fitting or so it really isnt worth the risk. Was also advised that the standard FPR on newage should be fine.

I know yours is a JDM STi which has a stronger fuel pump anyway so it's up to you if you decide to swap it.

I also notice you've fitted an induction kit, a full decat and a BOV, but you dont mention having it mapped to suite them - if you haven't then IMO you could be asking for trouble regardless of any fuelling precautions.

Oh, and "Mr Lewis maybe??" just makes u look like a bit of a d1ck. It was a sensible question followed by ppl attempting to give you good advice so why attempt to drag it down. Maybe you would be more at home here https://www.scoobynet.com/muppet-show-8/

Probably more likely to happen on a WRX engine chasing STi power.
Less likely with the STi engine that uses better internals.
