easy fix for this. Pull the pillar cover off which the belt runs behind, using a sharp Stanley knife or similar remove the top rib on the inside. You'll see fluff and crap where the belt rubs causing the squeal. Refit and all hey presto no noise. Should take you 10 minutes tops. There was a guide including pics somewhere on the net. I've done mine and my mates 02STi, no squeaks since. I heard it was an official Subaru Technical Bulletin that dealers are aware of but can't be bothered to do it.

May sound stupid, but spray a bit pledge on the belt, fully retract it first, then spray it on.

It does work 100%

I've got the squeak but I'm fairly certain its not a bit of plastic thats doin it.

If I lift the belt up where the eyelet is, theres some black residue. When I rub it off, no squeak for a few pulls.

Dunno what plastic bit your all talking about

All the ones I test drove did this. I pointed it out to the dealer whose car I bought, and they fixed it

Not sure where you are, but Bulldog in Twyford did *something* to the car and it no longer squeaks

In fact, its the only one I've been in that DOESN'T squeak from the air vents :sshh:

The inside of the plastic pillar has 3 or 4 strengthening ribs which are soft plastic about 3mm deep at its most, just trim away the top one. A sharp knife will go through it very easily and you'll leave it flush.
