Default Type r

Considering buying one and wondered how viable they are as my daily driver and only car?
Any opinions appreciated.

likewise - use mine 500 miles a week, half motorway. 60000 miles when I bought the car, 72000 miles now and the only thing to go have been replacement rear wheel bearings. Serviced regularly, oil every 3000 miles, and it goes supebly.

Not too expensive - my evo8 before broke the bank as it was seviced evey 6/8 weeks and ate clutches, pads, discs etc. Type r is as quick, if not quicker, sounds far better and is a third of the price.

get about 22/25 mpg easy on the motorway, but drops to under 20 if you push it. Insurance is good thru Keith Michael @ £500, only £150 more than my wifes Peugeot diesel. Very noisey on the motorway - have a firestorm so to be expected, but it sits quite happily at 70/80. Much over this and then it does get loud.

Taking the family including 3 kids on a 500 mile trip over the weekend. DVD fits snuggly on the headrests and off you go. Round trip last week of nearly 800 miles - not a squeak of protest and loved every minute.

not sure about residuals, but who cares!!

well how much more expensive would the car be to keep on the road than a wrx of the same vintage? steve

service costs me £200 to £250 thru a good independant, who has sericed the car since it came in to the UK. Compared to my P1 running costs are I would say cheaper as I don't have a warranty so can go where I like. My P1 used a fair bit of oil, type R service change only. To be fair I have had nothing go wrong, but I don' t track it and drive reasonably sensibly as usually I have the kids with me.

Tyre (Yokos 17s) have lasted over 15000 miles and still have life. I believe its on the original clutch (72000 miles plus), bearings were £150 all in inc labour. Can't say against a wrx but an independant is likely to be cheaper, and insurance is ok if you shop around. I paid £8000 for mine which is a Y plate so one of the last ones. My Evo cost £25k and was worth £16k 18 months later - even the P1s depreciated like hell.

So its value for money for me. All the performance for a fration of the price. There are horror stories out there - gearbox £2k plus, engine rebuilds etc but touch wood mine has had 12000 trouble free miles.

Done about 5000 miles in mine (MY99) and loved every one of them !

Insurance is a very reasonable £625 (Gary Moulson ). I was paying over £1000 on my E36 M3 prior to this. Running costs are pretty reasonable too. Even with the close ratio box I get about 220 miles to a tank £40-£45 (all local roads). Doesn't seem to make a huge difference if you like using the performance.

Had a major service when I got it about £300 all in and haven't looked back since. Just an oil change since then for about £40. Tyres are still as they were, clutch seems OK although it did slip briefly on the motorway once. Had a new radiator which was £90.

Originally I only bought it as a stop gap before I decided on my proper next car, but well over a year now and have still got it. I dont really want to part with it truth to be told.

Depreciation wise I dont think they are going to lose much money. They are quite rare and being a 2 dr command a premium above 4 drs. You cant import them any more either due to SVA laws. I am confident I could get back what I paid for mine over a year ago and don't think it will be worth a huge amount less this time next year.

Only problem I have is a leaking rocker cover gasket which gives me unpleasant burning oil smells.

Noisy, thirsty, harsh, expensive to run (relatively), but FUN FUN FUN

If you don't need the convience of 4/5 doors then it's a good choice.

Do it, you can always sell it later if you don't get on with it.

brilliant is the only way to describe it...wouldnt recommend it 4 motorways though on a regular bases due to the manic gearbox

RA is the same, just 2 extra doors. Unless you go for a RA without the add-on's such as electric windows spoilers etc. Both R and RA have DCCD, no ABS, short throw gearshift, close ratio gearbox etc, etc.

Either car is a good choice. Type R looks better IMHO

im sure the typeRA i lighter that the typeR
have the typeR not got a higher top speed with a longer 5th gear
