Cooling Down

Is it right that you need to run your car for a few minutes on idle before switching off, too cool the engine down?
What effect does switching it straight off have?

Something to do with the oil crystallising in your pipes when very hot, this causes unwanted damage to bearings etc in the turbo. When the engine is left at idle, the oil is constantly pumped round and will cool hot spots.......I think this is right but some technical bod may know more!

to cool the turbo down - not the engine!! It'll glow red hot after a thrash and if it is switched off can cause some serious damage. Best option is to drive for the last 2 or 3 minutes off the turbo (below 2500rpm or so) or failing that let it idle for a couple of minutes before switching off.

Just to reiterate:
The cooling down period is for the turbo.
The turbo is fed oil from the engine, so while the turbo is cooling down on idle, oil continues to circulate around the the turbo bearings.
Switching off immediately after hard driving may cause damage to the turbo by allowing oil to cook on the bearings.
My car came with a little sticker on the dash board telling me to allow at least one minute of cool down.
As Paul says, it's also a good idea to finish your journey with a few minutes of "off turbo" driving.
