Job Moving - Get a run around or use Scoob?

Just need a few opinions....

I am a multidrop delivery driver. My job is moving as the transport company I work for has lost a contract. I am being transfered to the company that is taking it over. It a good job which I enjoy and there aren't any other jobs round here similar.

My current employer is 2 miles from my house so I cycle (no comuting miles for last 18 months!!)
The new company is 22 miles from where I live = about 10,000 per year give or take holidays days etc.

I have been offered a lift share so can halve this to 5,000 miles.

Option 1. Use Subaru (2002 52 Bugeye WRX currently under 30,000 miles) £40 per week petrol. +5,000 miles added to the 6,000 miles a year I do in it socially?

Option 2. Get a Fiesta or similar for £1000 ish, insure 3rd party Fire theft for £120 and use £20 per week in petrol? no added miles on Subaru. No smelly passenger.

Is your scoob standard or Modified?

How long do you usually keep your cars?

go for the doggerthen you don't have to use the scoob for the trudge makin it more special when you do drive it!!

Go for the Fiesta or something similar which is cheaper to run etc.
Save the Scoob for the weekend jaunts etc. You could even look into a limited miles policy too for scooby if you haven`t already.

Only minor modifications:

Ninja II back box (back box only)
Mud flaps
Totally Mint condition.

Had the Subaru 2 years, planning to keep for forseeable future.

I am on a 10,000 a year policy so would be pushing the limit with insurance.

I am of the same mind "keep it special - not for the daily trudge!"

Then CHEAP runabout is a must!!
Plus you can also use for the shopping trips & not receive any dings!!!

I would get a cheap run around. Using the Impreza would cost bucket loads.
For the extra you spend in fuel for the Subaru you could probably buy half a dozen cheap motors.
Keep the beast in tip top order and search the small ads.

I used to do this. And it is a good move. Alot of people go down this route.

Something doesn't add up... firstly you say 10,000 miles, then you half it due to the share.... then you say £40 on fuel.... i do hope thats not for a mere 100 miles per week.....

However, if you get lets say 25mpg from the scoob, and you can get a runaround to do nearer 50, ie, diesel..... then you will halve the fuel cost to a mere £10 per week, therepfre saving £10, so, if you can tax and insure another car for £10 per week, then you'll be even stevens..... i am in a similar situation, and i have run a second car for nearly 2 years, BUT, you have to factor in the fact that you will end up using the runaround for more than just getting to work, AND also, you have to buy it, that cost is not allowed for anywhere..... AND, how long will that car last..... upkeep will be increased, and when it dies, you'll have to buy another one......
If i was doing the same journey everyday, then i would use the Scoob, i now don't use my scoob almost from one week to another, which angers me, i love my scoob, but i seldom drive it now, it's too easy to go most places in the runaround.... cheaper too!!


It's your call....

I haven't allowed for the fact that the scoob would be left in a car park though!!!

I've done both

The ideal is to keep the scoob in the garage and run a diesel yok as the fuel savings speek for themselves. Downside is the extra insurance and road tax that needs to be paid + cost of car so you need to do the sums well.

I left one job and started another & put 25K miles on the scoob inside a year but I had my fuel paid for. I used to love commuting in it but not the most comfortable of vehicles on long runs.

I ended up selling the scoob and buying a comfortable diesel but have recently bought a "play" scoob which sits in the garage and is just for high days and track days - that in my opinion is the best way.

I just bought a Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD (£400) two weeks ago for the same reason 20 mile daily commute.

I run it on vegetable oil at 40-50p per litre and gets 50+mpg. About £10 a week on fuel vs £35 in scoob just to get to work.

Plus don't have to park it miles away in supermarkets etc.

I will have to agree with puff+chris I do 20 miles a day from home to work and car share i ended up buying a shed run around for work keep the scoob in the garage only bring it out at weekends and sunny days plus I use the shed for shifting rubbish to the tip/school runs etc.

why have a great car like a scoob and then never drive it?

sometimes I'll just go out for a drive,just for the enjoyment of it.

(trips to the tip I use the wifes car )
