Default Where's the chassis number on a classic

Stupid question I'm sure but I need to find the chassis number for my car to order a part, I'm at work so haven't got the paperwork with me.

Do they want the vin number? or model number i.e. GC8, or soemthing else?

Cheers

If it's an import should be on the top of the front passengerside suspension strut. Think same as UK? Will be the GC8 part then the numbers and letters after.
Jamie.
