Question Knock Link Q???

hi all, just a quick q, does the knock sensor work like a microphone picking up eratic engine noises??? so would a loud induction kit or zorst trigger the knock link to light up like a christmas tree???

also, does your knock reading go up if you use other fuel rather than fuel your scoob is mapped to??? eg. using bp ultimate rather than optimax???

1. It picks up ALL noises it can hear - not just erratic noises

2. If you have a noisy engine bay then, yes, the sensitivity has to be nulled so much as to render the thing totally useless.

Why do you think that the Engineers on here, who know what they are talking about, call the CockLinks CockLinks?? Because, at the end of the day, they are there for show only - accept that and its all fine.

But some like to give it magical powers - which is vomit inducing!

The Knocklink circuit only picks up on certain frequencies, so the lights 'should' only be triggered at the onset of Knock.
Putting a different exhaust on should make little difference.
However, an older worn engine and some of the modified larger capacity Subaru's may cause more lights to illuminate due to increased noise from the engine/valvetrain but this should be a gradual increase in the lights i.e they illuminate more as RPM increases, rather then a sudden flash to red.

Most people only see the bottom green flash in the 4,000-5,000 rpm then maybe an occasional flicker of the 2nd green at v.high rpm.

The most common area for detonation is between 4,800 - 5,200 IMHO, so if you get a sudden flash to red in that area then something needs looking at.

Different fuels have different effects. Some fuels give slightly different knocklink activity due to their different ingredients, which give a slightly different burn. But this will only give marginal different behaviour in when and where the green lights flash. however if you see a large difference in activity then this is due to poor fuel with BP Ultimate being one of the culprits of this.

I use Esso SUL as it seems consistent, with the occasional tank of Tesco 99 or V-Max (but never really notice much performance difference).

I've run my car with detcans, knocklink and the knock detect on an Apexi PFC and can confirm that a very slight tinkle of knock could be heard on the detcans when the PFC was reading a knockcount of 24. Once the knock went above 30 the knocklink light shot up to red. So IMHO it works well and can detect very low levels of knock.

P.S the Knocklink is on the Max settings.
