Question When to get a FMIC?

My mate has bought a MY06 STI Type UK with these mods (about 390BHP) :

FULL STAINLESS DRESS KIT ... FORGE HEADER TANK ... FORGE POWER STEERING TANK ... FORGE RADIATOR WATR BOTTLE ... FORGE DUMP VALVE ... FORGE OIL CAP ... FULL SAMCO HOSE KIT ... HKS INDUCTION KIT ... GREDDY BOOST CONTROLLER ... HKS TURBO TIMER ... TEIN STRUT BRACE (NOW FITTED, THE ONE SHOWN IN THE PIC IS THE STI ONE) ... CUSTOM AIR INTAKE ... PRODRIVE FRONT GRILLS ... PRODRIVE REAR DIFF GUARD ... BRAND NEW PRODRIVE FLITTER pff7 18" WHEELS WITH TOYO TYRES THAT HAVE ONLY DONE 50 MILES ... TEIN ADJUSTABLE COILOVERS ... HKS ECU RE-MAP ... UPRATED FUEL PUMP ... UPRATED INJECTORS ... MAGNEX DE-CAT FROM TURBO ... FULL MAGNEX EXHAUST SYSTEM (6 INTO 4 OVAL) ... TINTED GLASS ... SUBARU WIND DEFLECTORS ... PRODRIVE MUD FLAPS ... PRODRIVE DIFF GUARD
and now he's getting a 20g roller bearing turbo and a new ECU remap.

Would he be ok using the standard TMIC or should he go for a FMIC?

400bhp is about the threshold - any more and get a FMIC.

having said that the TYpe 25 is 415bhp and that retains its TMIC.

if you get one dont buy a cheap crappy one off fleabay, will be less efficient than your standard top mount

What makes you think the cheapo ones off ebay are no good? Intercoolers aren't exactly cutting edge technology. There seem to be a fair number of Scoobynetters who have paid £300 or less for their front mounts and they're very happy with them. Especially seeing as if you want a big name intercooler you could be looking at £500-£1000 very easily.

The ones of ebay are of poor quality when you compare the standard of the fins and how densely packed the core is. They will be nowhere near as efficient and you would be better off retaining the the OE STI TMIC. The big names intercoolers like Hyperflow and APS etc are expensive for a reason, because they are quality made products.

Isn't it more about how good the Core is rather than how much they cost ?

Edited :- you beat me to it ... lol

After studying the spec, unless there's a different turbo on there already, I'm struggling to see how that spec (a remap (also HKS remap - what does that mean?), injectors and a boost controller) can net the car 390 bhp. In fact, even with the 20G I'd say that's just about what you could get!

Ray I guess you're right. But then, what's the point of the question if the basic facts aren't right?

Does he do any track/drag work?

The TMIC, as said, is very efficient and a 20g turbo is only around 370-400bhp, which the TMIC will handle fine.

Only if he answers "yes" to above question would i consider a FMIC (and a good one too) at that level of tune.
