Japanese cars being imported
I was watching the repeat of the BBC's Coast program, and the first bit they where looking at was those big container ships and there cargo with the big containers in various colours and sizes.
I was just wondering, how do japanese (esp. Subaru) and another makes of cars get imported into the UK.
Are they put in one of the containers, or just put in the belly of a big ship?

RORO, roll-on roll-off. They have precise plans of how to park cars at the very highest density and still get them on/off in the shortest possible time. They calculate gaps between cars down to the cm so that they won't brush into each other even during the heaviest swells. It's a real work of art !

BiJ; you dont want to know how the stevadoring companies 'get them off (the RoRo) in the shortest possible time'!
As people have said, virtually al cars that are imported come on massive ocean-going roll-on roll-off ferries like this behemoth below (the Asian Legend). I know this ships name because, by chance, most of the cars Ive imported have come to Tilbury/Southampton on it (I alsways use the same shipping company).

I meant to say, that some cars do come in containers, but by the time youve added the packing and container handling costs its usually far more expensive. Some car combinations will fit into containers well though and theyre also useful if you want to import other kit at the same time (filling the void space). Most basket cased and all half cuts come this way now because the Japan-side stevadoring companies either wont handle non-steering cars or they charge a fortune to load them into caddies.
The perspective int eh photograph is deceiving and the cars in the foreground hide the ships true size.
...This cow is small but this cow is far away.....

Off-loading worries me more than the rest of the journey combined.

This is the ship that my Jdm sti is coming over on:
Here is the captain on the right and his first mate.
how sad am i??
As you can see it is a container ship, this is because the car ships were all full. Takes about 19 days on a container ship compared to 28/32 days via car ship.
