Did they have trade plates?

they almost definitely came from the port auction. bought both of mine from there. drove both home with no plates (even through tunnel with its traffic cameras!) no problems. the law says that if a car is to be permatly imported then you can drive from the port to an mot station then straight home. fill in paperwork and wait for new reg to arrive. (car has to be moted first before they issue no plate) its ment to be nearest mot station but as long as its booked in and your not taking the p*** (liverpool to scotland) then no problem. still bit weird though, got loads of funny looks and you are very aware that the car screems pull me!

If the car wasn't registered (e.g. just been imported) then it can legally be driven without plates to/from a MOT test or a SVA test. Otherwise it would need trade plates at least.

You can get insurance on just the VIN number until its registered. You can get a car MOT'd without reg plates. But for car tax you need to have a reg no.

When I got my car imported, I did the 'personal import' thing, and got the Chunnel to France and back, and then drove all the way back to the midlands.
I was advised to fit plates showing the last 6 digits of the vin plate. The car was MoT'd and insured, but obviously didn't have it's own reg number at that point.
Technically, I guess I could have driven round on the VIN plates until the reg arrived (tax and reg applied for), but thought it would look too odd running around on plates with no letters!
