STi V4 Type R vs V5 Type R
Essentially what are the differences between the 2 cars?
In terms of power and equipment, do they both have Diff control and waterspray, what about roof vent etc.
Also what am I likely to pay for a V4??

Firstly, Type R (2 dr) doesnt have a roof vent, as that is just on the Type RA (4 dr). Diff control and water spray come on both as standard.
The main difference in vers 4 and vers 5 are that 5 has bigger rear wing, bigger front spoiler and the ecu is mapped slightly differently. This has caused some problems on the vers 5s with lower octane fuel, especially on track days (engines have been known to blow).
So mainly cosmetic differences really. I bought a Type RA vers 4 for £15,500 end summer with 5000 miles and in perfect nick, but prices are so subjective, its hard to tell.

Cosmetics aside, the V4 has the Phase 1 engine, and the V5 has the Phase 2 engine.
If you are planning on getting the car re-mapped, definately go for the V5 (subject to price). Whilst there have been a few cases of V5's having problems, they are mainly due to poor fuel, and it's recommended to use octane booster.
However, the differences between the phase 1, and phase 2 engines really show up with a remap. The later engine takes VERY well to a remap (based on Possum Link experience) and accepts far more ignition advance than the earlier engine.
This is not to say that the V4 engine isn't any good (I have one, so I hope not) it just won't run as much ignition. This can be overcome, but takes a little more work.

I am the fella that Cem is talking about, I am going to be at Donnington if you want to have a look at the car.
Price is fairly negotiable but it is a nice car (then i would say that).

It will run on normal unleaded but you wont get the performance for one, but also from vers 5 onwards it can be a real problem with lower octane stuff on the track. I gather the engine runs much too hot and it can blow. I suggest you always use octance booster.
I read in EVO (so it must be true!) that the version 5 Type R handles much better in the wet than the version 4 Type R. Something to do with spring and damper rates, although one suspects they may have had different tyres for the later car to have a marked advantage.
My friend bought a version four Sti from David Hendry and i understand he was given the same advice. 27,000 miles and it holed a piston...
Don't run it on regular whatever you do. Check out previous threads on "BROQUET" - i've subsequently fitted them and the engine actually feels smoother and happier, especially on Super.
