I'd check insurance quotes first before you decide which model you want. Don't want to set your sights on a STI to find the insurance would be £2k+
There's an Impreza to suit everyone , start with looking at what you can afford to run and take it from there.
Have you done any sample quotes yet?

I would buy a pristine STi 6. The very last of the classics. Much like the one I have
For me there is just something about the classic shape Imprezas that was lost after the bug eye was released.

If you can't get insurance on an import how about this only £7.5K (late uk classic) and only 25000 miles:
Subaru : Subaru Impreza UK Turbo 25Kmiles
or a bug-eye for £9K with only 33000:
Subaru : Subaru Impreza WRX AWD **Reduced**
or if a import isn't a problem then a late type-R with 42500 miles for £10.5K
Subaru : WRX STI Type R 3 Door (Reduced from £12,995!

depends on what you drive just now and what experience you have, if your coming out of a sub170hp car (306 gti or similar) id spend 6 grand on a 99/00 uk turbo, the difference in power will keep you grinning for months. then in 6 or 8 months as the thirst for power becomes too much swap it for a p1 or sti6 or type r. but if your used to more power, cupra or astravxr etc, then go straight to the second lot to get a proper step up

Think about what sort of driving you are going to be doing...
If this is a weekend car only then classic Type R, P1 might be the best bet.
If it's a daily driver and you'd appreciate things like a nicer interior etc then look at a new age.
