Picked Up My STI 8 Today - Then BAM, Engine Management Light...
Finally picked up the my03 jdm sti today, driving it home, all seems well, not giving it any boot etc. then suddenly, speedo stops working..... so i think hmm, well, could be same problem as the supra i had, carried on for 10 minutes, dont know if they are related but then the engine management light came on..... so i took it steady to get home, the car seemed fine etc. so I took it to about 4k revs in 1st, and it misfired.
Is my car screwed? Gonna take it to scoobyclinic tomorrow see if they say anything,

My JDM MY03 WRX STi lost it's speedo and the engine management light came on. It was the speedo convertor, it had failed and so was replaced. All was fine afterwards and has been since. It did not however misfire.

The information i've aquired from several people over the last few days is that the speed converters, which are fitted to the car in order to convert the speedo from kph to mph, can sometimes fail, they can also damage the speed sensor in the process. Basically, I'm being sent a new speed converter, free, by the supplying dealer, and today i've ordered a speed sensor, £88.00 plus vat. The speed converters can be bought for £65 online and has a warranty. For your peace of mind, check out the fault code I gave you on this website, and you'll see that it's exactly the symptoms you're describing. So, not a serious problem, but a costly one!

If you also need a new speed sensor, (change the speed converter first) and you have difficulty in getting one, speak to Jim at Cheam Motors Subaru Main Dealer, and guess what, they have a JAPANESE parts file on their computer and can get you most JDM parts within a couple of days..........one of the best Subaru main dealers in the country, highly knowledgeable, efficient and excellent customer service.

i had exactly the same problem with mine. Started when i temporarily lost the Speedo going over bumps and got gradually worse.
Problem was down to a a dodgy connection on the converter. Easy to check yourself assuming they housed it behind the dash-clocks?

If it's the speed converter that's broken, and you want to keep the car, just take it to Scooby clinic and get it sorted. Taking it back to the dealer you bought it from and demanding he fixes it could result in a poor bodged fix it job.
Personally, I'd phone the dealer you'd bought it from and explain what has happened. Say you want to keep the car as long as this is the only thing wrong with it. Explain you're planning on taking it to a specialist to have it looked at. If it is the speed converter, you'd appreciate it if they would cover the cost of the work that need to be done.
If they refuse you could have a case against them. Phone the office of fair trading.

sold as seen means just that and unless its something wrong with the vehicle that is illegal then you cannot take it back. Second hand vehicles are just that and sometimes faults happen. if you took it back and just gave it to him with the keys then legtally it could be accepted as a present and then you could end up 12k out ofd pocket. if he has a v5 then it's legally binding too. lol
you have to remember english law sucks and they will screw you

Earlier the seller was described as a 'private dealer'.
Isn't it the case that someone is either a private seller OR a dealer ?
If they are trading then they aren't a private seller. I suspect there could be very interesting tax implications for them if they were undeclared traders.
The 'misfire' could simply be the effect of the rev-limiting due to the error code, and in that case it doesn't do any harm. Take it to someone that knows what they are doing...

if the seller is a dealer, then sold as seen does not apply!!!
he has a legal duty to sell the vehicle fit for purpose. The only way around it would be if he sold it to you with a caveat that the speed sensor was faulty...
if i recall, the stndard is... the car must be capable of passing an mot....
with a busted speed it wont!!!
and before the mot hero,s pop up and say otherwise.... think!!!!!!!

As above, what is a private dealer?
Sold as seen only works if you're a private individual selling your personal car. An 'at home' trader is a trader, end of. Sold as seen only applies to private sales.

Thanks for all the replies guys,
Took it to scoobyclinic today, and it was the converter, for some reason, "XtremeScoobies" had fitted the converter outside of the car, not on the interior, and only coated it with sum sort of tape. That got wet and hey presto, no speedo, EML on.
Car went into limp mode and stopped boosting, got the new speedo and the ecu fault thing was cleared, driving off, and it was sound, then my boost went again..., tuk it back to scoobyclinic, they reset my ecu, and it was fine again, until now, so I need to find out whats playing up with it!
Edit - A Private dealer is a guy who deals in cars, but is not a registered dealer (yeah i just made that up) but thats who he is lol

As it turns out, iv just spoke to my dad, who is not a happy chappy, and said the sold as seen rule thing doesnt apply anymore. Although its only cost me £100, he seems to think if the guy trades cars, he is liable for some if not all of the cost
