Modification question
Hi,
I believe I read somewhere that if you get engine mods done to a scooby, you should have a de cat exhaust or it could cause problems? Is this true? I have an 03 sti type uk and am looking to add a boost controller, uprated fuel pump and panel air filter - would I be ok with these mods without the de cat?
Thanks

OK bud,
Getting your car decatted won't cause any problems to speak of, many owners on this site have run their cars for years, me included without any issues.
What I would say though is that you get your car remmaped so as to benefit from the gains it would provide, in some cases you can get boost spikes (this is like overboost) but remmaped properly you'll be fine.
As for not having it decatted whilst using other mods, definately not!, a full decat will do wonders for your car.

Your best options are an Ecutek3 remap (by somebody that knows what they're doing) and a partial decat. Think your sti has two cats, but not sure. If so, you can lose one and still have an MOT friendly Scoob. The remap is approx £600, exhaust, maybe £300.

Thanks guys,
I wanted to get a de-cat downpipe but was told from a decent garage nearby that because the 03 sti has a twin scroll turbo, you have to get the full system because the downpipe would be a different size to the rest of it.. so I should get it remapped? Hmm wasn't budgeting for that too, bummer.

question: why dont you see many renault 5 turbos on the road today?
answer: becoz everybody fitted boost controllers and wound it up and bang!
does this answer some of your question?

Can I re-phrase the comment so it's (more) true?
"If you carry out engine mods to a scoob you should generally have it re-mapped, or it is likely to cause problems".
De-cat will only make more power potentially available.
