I sit ok to drive to garage with suspected crank knocking ?
Should it be ok to drive a car with suspected crank knocking to a garage for them to have a look. Scooby bits and another not so well known garage said it would be ok as long as its driven really really slow and dont go over 3000 rpm (as the damage is already done). Just checking if this is right as i dont want more problems! ! !

would tow it there if I was you.
not that I disbelieve the experts but a knocking crank is bad and can lead to bore scoring or worse a rod through the side of the engine. IMHO

Its up to you but i'd tow.
just get a straight tow bar not a rope. ie the extendable solid version. will make it a lot easier.
How much would it be for them to collect it if they could?
a lot cheaper than a full engine i suppose.

i drove mine, already buggered so providing you go dead slow you will be fine, bet it's safer than a tow as well.
Good luck, bet it's number 3 that screwed - it's not going to be cheap

My suspicion is that it should not be driven anywhere as you may either exacerbate the existing damage or (even worse) risk damaging parts that would have otherwise been salvagable, thus compounding what will already be a big bill.

Agree........ at the moment it may be a spun bearing thats the problem, drive the car and that might turn into a siezed big end and a busted con rod that may puch a hole in the case, then a complete lower end will be needed instead of a rebuild of your existing one.

12miles is too far. If that knocking bearing shell spins, it will starve the rest of the engine of oil (which is already being starved of oil as it is from the excessive bearing clearance), and potentially end up with putting a rod though the blobk, rendering it scrap, so you'll need an entirely new bottom end rather than just simple rebuild of what you already have.
Your choice. It's your money.

Totaly agree. If its got the death ratle don't even start the thing up, the risk of it waving a little white flag at you is to high, hire a trailer for the day, should only cost £30 - £40, small price now rather than a couple of grand later. Slowly slowly catchy monkey!!

Bet you wished you had breakdown cover now????
Swinton do a good one for about £50, you only have to wait 24 hours for the full poilicy to take effect, they will then tow you a garage of your choice
I didn't have any cover for years, decided last year I'd better get some, broke down three days later and got towed home,

if you spoke to jason at scoobybits, wouldnt he be able to tow the scoob to his place, after all he has that big **** off pickup with bling bling wheels, and a trailer too.
ive been to see him a couple of times and he really knows his ****, excellent all round, and in this area i would say theres nobody better. thats a personal opinion based on personal experiences, but many agree.
regards the car, give him a bell or pm him off here (jasemac)
hope that helps...

Just to clarify recovery was offered, would not drive one myself.
However since I have not seen the car for a few weeks impossible to say whether it is a bottom end fault ,however this car when last seen by me was a typical my97 car with piston slap and if this is the noise then obviously ok to drive.#
Recovery or towing in best option but obviously costs.
