Not heard about the no.3 piston.. But I have had the following done under warranty on mine:

2 New Batteries (The standard one went flat within 3 days)

1 set of 2 new rear struts due to clunking noise after taking foot off the accelarator (It's a known problem and fixed under warranty)

A set of new 4 Alloy wheels (As the first set had corrosion coming through, replaced under warranty)

And some other small things sorted such as the passenger handle needing adjusting. But still have it after 2 1/2 years.

have had an 03 STI for just over a year now. Knocking rear shocks, and stone chips. thats about it. Engine's pretty robust , certainly more so than a P1 for example.

No3 piston is usually a fault found on classic WRX's and STi's ???

go for it, they are great cars and definately no worse than most out there. For example my sti 03 blobeye has been more reliable than my previous 03 bmw 325 convert.

you wont regret buying on. get a type UK

Leaking rear shocks and leaking radiator (around the crimping at the top) both replaced under warranty.

Weak OE battery replaced with Halfords Calcium.

Appalling fitting of Prodrive kits by local dealer (who I'm currently pursuing with a County Court claim for work not done and fuel pump not fitted but all charged for).

Damaged bolt in front caliper goosed caliper when I changed discs.

At the end of the day if you leave the car standard you shouldnt have much go wrong... i think the rear shocks are about the only 'common' fault you will come by and then this is covered by warranty's generally.

If you start playing (exhaust, induction kits etc..) make sure you get a remap fairly soon after as your likely to run lean otherwise (causing no.3 piston to melt!!).

Other than that, have fun... Newage Impreza STi's are an experience you will never forget... from the smile when you get in the car, to the smile when you get out again.

Nothing wrong except shocks as most will say. You can improve loads though (as with all cars) e.g. brakes -> AP racing, Handling (stage 1 or 2 for road use) see Powerstation. Power can go up to say 330 - 340bhp and torque without major internal changes (see scoobyclinic, TSL, Powerstation, etc). Sound/vibration control --> Noisekiller. ICE front and rear speakers and headunit. I've had no worries with mine but only done c20k miles (now up to 30k on clock). my53

Default Tough as old boots....

02 STI (UK) yeah noisy rear shocks, don't care....
Eats front tyres, don't care ( it's my driving at fault. )
Looks, Hmmm, I don't care if it goes like that
Brakes, DS 2500's get 'em warm and they're superb...
Never missed a beat, yet !!
So quick if its damp/slippy out.... not the fastest car ever made in the dry...
6 mpg on track day, 22 mpg round town, better on a run out....
Bits aint cheap so don't cut corners...
6 months for oil change, unless you do big miles
Battery gave up at 45 months old, Halfords calciummy

Not needed any spares, damaged wheel my fault, tracking done to be sure.
Re-map STI with intake and exhaust equals 330 Bhp, and unless very young doesn't cost more to insure, ( Very old git... ).....

Don't grow old wishing you COULD have, but didn't !

Add extra security, see Bubba's story....
