Default 10k to spend! what would you do??

ok the time has come to get my self an impreza and it looks like i shall have 10k to spend!
ive had older cars since i past my test but now i want something newer!
so the choice is either an sti bug eye but for that money it will probably have over 65 thousand on the clock a wrx bug eye with something like 30 thousand on the clock or a blob eye wrx, for my budget these seem to be over 60 thousand miles too.
the problem is i much prefer the look of STI cars and dont no weather id be happy with the look of A wrx!
from what i have read it wont cost to much to get a WRX performing like an STI though??
what are you opinions on this then??
i always seem to buy the wrong car so this time i want to get it right
thanks in advance!

Don't discount higher mileage cars!

My own STi has done 62k miles now and hasn't missed a beat. Engine is running really sweet (still standard), gearbox is fine. Clutch is a bit juddery when cold, but I'm used to it and it doesn't annoy me enough that I would go to the expense of changing it.

Only things I've had to do have been routine maintenance (serviced every 10k miles by a Subaru main dealer), plus some the usual consumables like brakes, wiper blades and tyres. The only exceptions to that were a front drop-link which started rattling, and an air/fuel ratio sensor.

I certainly intend to keep mine for a few more years yet, and aren't expecting any major repair bills.

Buy the newest low mileage standard Classic that you can find, should be about £7k, then you can pocket the other £3k.

I know you said you want a newer car but you could get a r34gtt skyline for that price, excellent engine, 280 bhp as standard, lot more tuning potential than a subaru.

Thats what id do if i was you

a few probs with that though mate! rear wheel drive and i like to have some island fun with out worrying about having a big off!

type R 6 V-LTD yeah i love them but i think the insurance is a bit much, they dont have ABS and dont they have turbo issues after like 35 thousand miles (could all be bull **** but thats the impression i got from a mate who wanted one)
there are lots of classics where i live to and to be honest i do prefer the new age look now although this hasnt always been the case!
so im making progress here!

either STI bug eye (witch i really like)
or WRX bug eye with the view to beaf its performance up!

is their any major reason why one would be better than the other!!

also please tell me more about this EU import idea ie. who do i contact about bying one and what was the 3 year thingy you mentioned (excuse me )
thanks guys its all helping

Sti's are stronger all round. from the crank and pistons to the gearbox.

Yes ok you can modify a WRX but over time things will suffer. ive seen and heard of loads of WRX's who's bottom ends have gone pop. plus the gearbox struggles when you put more than around 340-360bhp through it where as an STI will handle it with ease.

To get your WRX over 300 will cost a few quid also - maybe best to spend the money on an STI and a full decat + remap and filter will see 330 bhp'ish no probs.

Get an STi

I own a Classic and should have bought an STi

There is around 7 uk300's for sale on auto trader.... And from looking at the prices of them, they seem to be holding decent values...! Ive got one and love it, standard apart from sensible mods, does not miss a beat, and personally with the Prodrive lights, Superb interior, you have a excellent starting point... my opinion, and i know how much folk on here hate the bug eyed model....!

10K got me my low mileage MY00 UK Turbo. Had to get it as I could not comfortably afford an STI.

If I had it again now. Then AC-scoobie has it on the head

If you buy a newage car with 60k on the clock then consider what will have been done (if serv hist is full):

50k - major service inc cam belt
60k - major service inc all fluids and spark plugs

It will most likely have had new disks and pads and maybe even a clutch. This works costs a lot of money to have done so bear in mind these things when thinking of buying.

A lower mileage car may have less miles and therefore be generally less worn, but it may also have things that will be due for replacement soon, rather than having already had them done. If you buy a 30k car then it is 20k to the next cambelt, a 60k car has 40k to go.

I have a 2001 bugeye jdm sti. It had 32k on the clock when I bought it 11 months ago. It now has 59k on. In the last 3 months it has had 4 new tyres, new disks and pads, 50k service inc new cambelt and tensioner. It just passed the mot too. I do a lot of miles so the services come around quickly, but having just spent a load of cash on it I will be keeping it for a while longer. I wouldn't swap it for a lower mileage wrx.

I believe a uk sti will be easier / cheaper to insure than a jdm, maybe worth getting some quotes before you decide. STI is also more expensive than wrx.

You should be able to get a good bugeye sti with your 10k though, maybe even have some change for mods if you negotiate well.

Yes it is... and they come with 18" wheels, STI interior, etc etc, some were ppp'd, not the run of the mill bug eye at all. some will not agree tho...

I'd either get the Green WRX or a Type R.

Personally tho I'd spend 10k elsewhere.

some good points their ken thank you!
and some nice ideas too from all of you
getting confused myself now lol!!
has a uk300 got an sti engine or std wrx engine???
its either gonna be a uk300 or a jap STI
my understanding now is i can get a nice jap STI bug eye with 20k on the clock for 10 grand! that would be brilliant for me except insuring a jap car costs more!
as christmas is only a few weeks away im thinking of buying in the new year now so look out for my bug eye questions lol!
thanks all youve been a great help
