Default FIRST SCOOBY

Hi guys (and girls!)

Just wanted to say hello to everyone as I'm now looking for my first ever Impreza

I've waited a long time for this and want to try to get it right first time

My budget is up to £7K and I'd prefer a non-import.

My plan is on 3 levels;

1 - Purchase suitable vehicle

2 - Make "minor" changes as and when necessary (exhaust / air filter etc)

3 - Make vehicle as "bombproof" as possible, as cheaply / safely as possible

I've no real intentions of massive increases in power as I've already driven a 5 door WRX and found it to be perfect (scared myself sh*tless in the process!)

Any suggestions comments would be very much appreciated.

You could buy a standard MY00 Uk Turbo for about £5k, mod it for about £1.5k to 270ish bhp and smile

Thanx Stix.

The Powerstation upgrade sounds superb - didn't want to mod it but might not be able to resist at that price and difference in performance

Does anyone have any thoughts on first "tweaks" and what order to do them in (filter / exhaust etc). I'd be chuffed to get a sorted MY00 within my budget

Have now started searching this site for more info on best way to do things.

Well the first thing to do is to get the breathing right, hence filter and exhaust change.

Its generally accepted that it is best to keep the standard airbox (unless you go down the front mount route), and just change the panel filter for something freer flowing - JR, K&N, Sti, Green are all considered pretty good.

Exhaust then next. For best results you need to change all three sections - front downpipe, centre and backbox.

Downpipe: to keep MOT friendly, a Sports Cat downpipe is a good idea. Ninja only £299 also.

Centre: junk the cat and either go for a resonated or straight through - depends on level of noise/drone. Most people go the resonated decat centre, much better on motorways in particular.

Back box: up to you, again depends on look/noise level.

Afterburner, Blitz, 5Zigen - LOUD!

Ninja - not quite so loud.

Magnex, H&S - burble but quieter

Have a look here for Scoobyworlds zorsts for classics:

Impreza Turbo 1993-2000 Classic:Impreza Turbo 1993-2000 Classic: Scoobyworld Afterburner Vortex [AFTERBURNERBB] - £279.99£249.99

After that, a remap would be ideal then to get the most from the mods, as in previous link Powerstation or other places do them for £500+VAT.

Some people of course will say to do brakes/suspension first before any power mods - up to you.

I did the clutch, had a service on mine before modding. Find the standard 4-pots ok for braking, having Eibachs Pro-Springs fitted today actually. Again, standard suspension is ok but can obviously be improved.

Hi Stix,

Thanx for the post - that was the info I was after

I tried a 5 door MY01 WRX at the weekend but was a bit concerned that there was a "hole" in the plastic rear shroud of the steering wheel on the left hand side . Still don't know why but that was my only complaint.

Awesome performance (compared to a 24V Senator)

Was the WRX standard?

If so try one that has been tweaked to 260+.

Then try a classic tweaked to 260+, and it will be a lot quicker again due to being much lighter

As you mentioned 7k, I was thinking classic - but I suppose new ages are getting to that price range now, especially wagons?

Hi,

Yeah, it was standard.

TBH I prefer the classic anyway, so if it's quicker all the better.

Looking through Auto Trader at the moment as I'd prefer to deal with a garage and offload my current car in PX. Been quite surprised at the amount of classics available and the prices.

Classic prices have plummeted recently. When I bought my current one (March) I thought I had a complete bargain - MY00 95k £5k.

Now thats the norm, the prices have 'flattened' and new ages are now 7k+.

As for quicker etc. as the new ages are about 200kgs heavier, makes a big difference. To get the same power/weight ratio in a new age as my classic running 273/273, I would need about 320 bhp!

Something like this is what you need:

Subaru : CHEAP IMPREZA TURBO 2000 ON THE NET

Looks standard, low miles and will give you a grand or so to detango, change filter/exhaust and remap

Oh, and its in the best colour too...

Went to have a look at another 5 door today - MY99 T plate in flat red.

Looked really nice except the paint on the bonnet scoop and rear spoiler was a darker shade. The dealer said this was due to fading and was common as they're made out of plastic - is this true or a blag?

60K and FSH for £4,800 and fair price for my car in PX. I'm very interested but will need to get it inspected. Well within budget and would allow me a remap.

Any comments would be much appreciated
