Hi Steve,
I can kill 2 birds with one stone here, i use to own a 306 gti-6 (r reg, new shape) but sold it to a garage in Hyde, manchester 6 months back (they still have it)
Ok its in white, not many people want one in white but i had it rolling roaded and it was pushing 177bhp, 147@wheels in standard form with ngk plugs.
The good thing is, its also a fiat dealer, so as they also have a large stock of fiats your friend gets to have a choice!!
The pug is a demo + one owner, had 20k on the clock when i sold it, shouldnt be much more than 22k now, still warrantied by peugeot too!! (mobil 1 synthetic oil from 9k)
Last time i saw the price for the pug it was at 8995, that was in the local paper so...
Just give me a shout for the telephone number and ill email it to you if your friend is interested
Tony

That sounds pretty reasonable, and he has a white car now too, so that wouldn't be a problem! However, he's not quite ready to buy yet - I was looking for opinions on reliability/costs/fun of the cars on offer.
I've heard a lot of good things about the GTi-6 myself (it was my second choice after a Scoob), but I've a feeling they are just toooo hot (ie expensive) for my mate.
Cheers,
S

Hi Steve,
Sorry would have given you more info on the gti-6 but ive been in ireland on a course, damn!!
Well i can tell you its pretty reliable, they had some probs with head gaskets as both the ones i had went back in and had them replaced, also there was a recall on all pre 98 models, just for re routing of fuel lines, but i had that done too, handling is brill, there is some oversteer if you floor it in a corner but its pretty easy to control, as for costs, well fuel was the main one, it wasnt too bad though and the engine sounds brilliant, better even than the scoobs
Servicing is very reasonable, about 130 from a main dealer so its not a rip off, can go up to 200 for a major service but id call that pretty reasonable anyway.
Hope this helps

Have you tried a 106GTi?
I have had one for the last two and a half years / 30k and it has been great fun / very reliable.
I wouldn't really recommend it if you need to spend a lot of time on the motorway - "buzzbox" springs to mind...
However, its just as much if not more fun than my MY00 on dry twisty roads (zero understeer, and you feel more involved in the action).

Honda Cicic VTI gets my vote as well
Bulletproof engine/build quality great handling, good economy. Bit anonymous looking - i think thats a plus point myself
168BHP - from memory
I had one and loved it
1.6 as quick as the 1.8 and freeer revving 1.8 bit more torque
19mph per 1K revs so a bit of a buzz box on the motorway
I saw 7.5k revs in 5th gear once (142mph) on a slight down hill
0-60 in 7.0 (ish)

How about a VW Corrado, they are super motors. Used to have a 16v but always wanted the G60 or VR6. Any of these is a great fun beast for under £10K and they are pretty rare too. Hell, they're even practical, what more does he want???
PS the handling is so good they don't even need Koni suspension.

Cossie !!!!
As long as you wear a face mask you wont get recognised or killed by the fumes!
Mine was £4500 - spent about 3k on it and now it hits the limiter in 5th in about 1.2miles Avo coilover suspension, 330mm 4 pot brakes, 17s . All very discreet bar the sideways action. Proven 158mph and all for 7k max which leaves you with change to buy another small car although I can honestly say I have had very little problems but know others who have.
Just find a good one - mine had 59k when I got it.

Cheers Guys. Opinions so far -
- Current shape Honda Civic VTi - maybe a bit dull, image-wise? But in the running...
- Corrado - Cool car, maybe a bit hard to find a clean one, then expensive to maintain? Also a bit small inside for all that canoeing kit + mates
- 306GTi - THE GTi, but maybe a bit too much on insurance etc
- Bravo HGT - nobody's driven one
- 306XSi is the one we keep coming back to I think.
- 106 etc - too small, sorry
- Celica etc - too mad, sorry (he's after a practical *warm* hatch really)
- Golf - he's got some irrational hatred of these, otherwise they might fit.
Ta,

Something a bit different, how about a SEAT Ibiza 16v Cupra Sport. I had a 8v, which had excellent low down torque and great handling, the 16v is even better with 150bhp.
Should be a few about soon with the new Ibiza with the 1.8 Turbo VW/AUDI/e.t.c engine in, available this month (I think)..
Just a thought...
Darren.

Tony - cheers, are you a dealer?!
When he gets serious about actually parting with some cash, I'll mail you.
