Default is there some sort of governing body with ECU mappers?

or can anyone just get the know-how and a laptop and start up business?

not planning on doing this myself by the way just wondered if there was any certificating that needed to be done as it seems a very much word of mouth/personal recomendation thing that gets a reputation.

don't really know alot of mappers reputations, but appreciate that some have WRC etc. history and don't doubt some mappers don't know their **** from their elbows and have caused no end of problems with customers cars. don't know if there's a 'secret' list of people to go to and those to avoid?

Anybody can set themselves up as a mapper and unfortunately that is just what happens.
Your choice of mapper is critical to getting the best out of your vehicle and more importantly, avoiding engine failures due to mapping issues.

but this is the problem harvey, apart from recomendation on here there's seems to be no real way of finding a good one from a bad one.

there seem to be alot of mappers popping up, but the same names crop up on here time after time i'm guessing everyone has their own tweeks on an ecutek remap for example? just wonder how many take it too far for a headline grabbing bhp figure?

The flawed mappers will have a history of engine failures or under performing maps. Unfotunately many mistakes are burried and silence bought or the recipients of the flawed maps are too timid to say what has happened.

Well, the moral of the story is only go and get yours mapped by someone off here

You mean apart from the Scoobynet Inquisition and the self-appointed inquisitors?

"No-one expects the Scoobynet Inquisition!"

As with anything really customer satisfaction has to be key.

There are probably only 3 mappers whom I'd consider and all three have a vast amount of Subaru experience with unparalleled customer satisfaction. Why you would even consider someone who you're not sure of is beyond me TBH. As Harvey has said, it's the most critical aspect of Subaru tuning.
